Updating BIOS on a Lenovo laptop - running into an immediate problem at the first step with innoextract

This might be silly, but sometimes using a different USB port can make a difference.

I believe I just used dd? Checking my history all I did was:

sudo dd bs=16M if=/path/to/Hirens.iso of=/dev/sda status=progress oflag=sync

After clearing it with gparted I believe. Maybe something else as well I forget at this point

It’s a little late now, but I also thought about that. Didn’t work unfortunately

maybe not use such a large byte size Normally I just use 4M

Why Clear it? dd OVERWRITES THE BLOCKS

Personally I have hirens on a ventoy disk and I have never had an issue updating my bios this way.

Same here … Not sure what the issue is.

This is my first time using dd, and I was just trying to find a way to flash a usb on linux since I haven’t done that before - it’s usually the other way around, flash linux on windows, not flash windows on linux haha. That’s the full reason, just ignorance.

Same goes for the 16M. I’ll go with 4M this time

I’m usually more cautious and thoughtful than this. I guess when I get more stressed, my Linux good sense takes a dip

Maybe once you get hirens back on the usb give the bios flash another go.

Do you believe it might be because of the block size I used with dd? Otherwise I don’t see the difference

I actually thought this issue was a fairly straight forward thing. Maybe I’m old and just have been doing it to long

It should have been simple, I think a consensus has been reached on that lol

Ok attempting reboot now

Reboot has been successful. Loading in to Hirens now. One moment as I get the installer again

Ok trying the install again. Although I don’t think we have done anything differently so I don’t really expect a different outcome

Yup. Same error

maybe try not using dd and use ventoy or whatever else there is out there

I don’t know if Hirens is the problem though. I can boot into it just fine. I’ll give it a try anyway

if you were able to boot into it I would think its not the problem. I have used this method for many of years and never have I once ran into a problem. The latest Version of Hirens was able to update both my Laptop (Lenovo) and my Desktop (HP) back in October it took less than 15 minutes to do both

Dunno what to tell you man. No idea what is going on. This should in theory be a very fresh laptop as well - got it for my birthday on the 15th.

If only there was more online about this error, but couldn’t find much of anything. It feels like the universe wants to spite me on this for no particular discernible reason lol.
