A packaged is orphaned when it doesn’t have a maintainer. If you look at your link, you will see there is no maintainer.
As a side note, when an AUR package moves from being orphaned to having a new maintainer is the point of greatest risk for an AUR package. Be sure to review the PKGBUILD diff if someone new picks it up.
