Update Problem Makepkg as root prevented

Hi lads&gents,

this moment I got a problem with updating my system. I decided to load the packages of 3 AUR–Paks new. Seems that had not worked.

What command did you run?

Make sure you don’t run yay or paru as root or with sudo.

I ran yay -Syu

but before I had a sudo su as I had some commands which required the sudo authorization and I forgot to quit that before updating. So when I quit that now and update the 3 packages with yay separatly will fix this issue? Afterwards updating the native part with pacman?

It’s good that the system prevented the installation of the 3 Aur-packages.

Yes, you need to exit the root shell before running yay.

Correct.

If you run sudo su or sudo -i that puts you in a dangerous root access mode. I’d strongly advise you avoid doing that

As you just discovered, you performed an action whilst forgetting you were in that mode. Luckily the AUR helper sensibly stopped you from performing that action, but imagine it hadn’t and imagine the AUR package you were installing had malicious code in it, or even just sloppy code, running with root level access now

Exited the su state.

Normally I do this immidiatly after finishing for what I used it but this time I really forgot it and did try a fatal update. What a luck that yay prevented it.

So now am out and are a normal user again I can use yay to update those three packages, right.

command is for all with yay or paru

yay -S patool 
yay -S fvs2
yay -S python-setuptools-reproducible 

and afterwards 
pacman -Syu

Well, Traur marked the 3 Aur-Packages with 100 trust, 96 and 98 trust.

And pacman & yay ended afterwards with “nothing to do”

How do you react and act when having several times a command that requires any time the sudo right? Do you always use the sudo at eacht command?

most terminal apps will keep the “Root” password active for X amount of time After said time you then have to readd the password

As @thefrog noted, you don’t need to continually enter your password, if you’ve recently used sudo.

however for the system to know that its being run as an Elevated user you still need to add sudo to the command. So if you update mirrors then run pacman you will still need to tell the system you are still “Root” user. So even though you will use sudo it shouldn’t ask for the password again

@thefrog Yes, I know that `sudo` always “lasts” for a while, but earlier I was continuously checking various services with `firewall-cmd --info-service` for a good three-quarters of an hour, and that’s when I got carried away and ran `sudo -su`.

I’m not sure you understand what sudo is vs what su is. Both basically allow you to “Switch User” Sudo gives it to you for a few moments where as SU will continue to be root until you exit the root terminal.

so sudo su shouldn’t be used at all.

Please do. man is your friend. As much as I love new users to Linux I also want them to be able to do Linux “Right” many don’t do things right then blame the OS for their lack of Understanding.

No problem. I am not totally new to Linux. I didn’t use it that often.
Normally, the regular sudo command fits 99.9% of all situations.
This evidence has made me extra careful. Rest assured.
