Transparent / blurry panels and windows

I am using the mercury neo release. My question is: how can I achieve, transparent / blurry / translucent panels and windows?

I am new at endeavour os and kde plasma as well. I tried various things, mainly through asking to AI, but anything it offers seem to be outdated. but failed on all. I prefer not to use themes as they bring their set of problems. I would appreciate clear set of instructions if you could provide. Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome,

If you get to the panel configuration you should be able to select the Opacity; Opaque, Translucent, Adaptive.

Just how much it is translucent will depend on your Plasma Style.

Thank you for your reply. I have tried translucent and adaptive options but the result was always opaque. How does plasma style affects translucency?

The Plasma Style (theme) is what has the code/images for the dimensions and opacity and other such things for the panel and widgets. In the past it also would have contained/dictated most of the icons on your panel too, but in the latest versions of Plasma this is no longer the case ( Icon Theme applies to the panel too ).. so the Plasma Style really mostly defines the colors, opacity, and geometry of the panel and widgets. Including just how translucent the panel can be, if at all.

For transparency, I use a Window Rule.

  • System Settings → Window Rules
  • Add a new rule called transparency
  • Set Window Class top Unimportant
  • Set Window Types to All Selected and select all types. Ignore the warning.
  • Add Active and Inactive Opacity
  • Set to Force
  • Set the opacity you want

For blur I use Better Blur but you have to build it yourself and rebuild it after every plasma update. Follow the instructions on the github.

You should have come here first

And in relation to KDE Plasma, there are lots of different themes available. Check the KDE store, the ones actually being intalled are listed in System > System settings > Colours & Themes . There you’ll also find the “Get New…” buttom that I’ld prefer to download new themes instead of using the methods provided via the KDE store.

Make sure to chose themes which are flagged with Plasma 6.

I mainly use kvantum and panel colorizer.
It takes some getting used to but once you understand it you can do really cool work and that quite easy.

Panel Colorizer

Go in edit mode and add the panel colorizer to your panels, you probably have to download it first (arrow)

Once you put it on a panel, you can choose many styles (also translucent)
Note: Idk if it will apply to you, but for me its a bit buggy and requiers a reboot for the style to take full effect, then it works perfectly.
(you can also hide the panel colorizer symbol, once hidden a rightklick on panel will show the settings button)

Kvantum

Download kvantum

sudo pacman -S kvantum

Note: I suggest you make a kvantum folder for your themes

Then you go look for kvantum themes, I for excample use Sweet

Download your favourite style for excample this:

Then open kvantum and select the theme (follow the path where you installed it)
Then klick on install the theme

Then you got to change Theme/delete and add the theme there, you will have to then klick on “use this theme” (translated poorly probably) if you use the theme i use you have to do it to both the theme itself and the toolbar

If you like you can play around with the config (i didnt) if you are done, klick save

If you havent already, make shure transparency is activated in kde settings

Then make shure you use kvantum theme here

If you did all this (and I didnt miss anything), concrats, you should be transparent now.

What to do if I want to be translucent instead ?

Nevermind, being totally fine being fully opaque.

If it is translucent or transparent depends on the theme you install. I think you can tweak it with kvantum if you are skilled enough (i am not, kvantum settings scary) to set how much transparency or how translucent you want to have it.

If you are fine going with being fully opaque but still want theming you can just use the (global) theme downloader in the systemsettings.
(imo i tried “carl” once and it looked great, it also has a kvantum version which makes it translucent, similar to sweet but i think the non translucent one looks very nice)

Edit: if you by chance were joking bc the way i worded “you should be transparent now” yeah idk how YOU yourself become transparent or translucent

To make it look translucent, I just turned on the blur effect.
Hopefully I got the meaning of ‘translucent’ right!

Wait wait wait-
You have white window buttons
tell me your secret

Oh, I tweaked the Silvery-Blur-Dark-Aurorae window decorations a bit.

It hasn’t been a dead serious comment from my side

I doesn’t make that much of a difference. As it depends on the pyhsical spectrum of light. And the intensity of the light (or radiation) source if you’re fully opaque or translucent. Transparency on the other hand is a different kind of story.

There are plenty of window decorations to choose from. Only the “get new…” button is hidden, at least on my install.

idk how to tweak window decorations.. guess I have to learn it
Thought you found window buttons I haven’t found yet

Yeah I know, I too have window decorations, tons of them to choose from. problem: I cant find any buttons (round circle ones) that are only white, I have a feeling there are none.
(and ofc even if the buttons are white, the rest of the decoration window border thing should also match my other theming)

Close enough ?!

looks weird and blue (and when window out of focus they turn blue)

You can also use Klassy to change the window decoration and the buttons, you can choose whatever form and color you want

tried this now for a while, no idea how to get actual circles here

only got to circles when hovering, but no actual circles. even tried to import presets, one works (the one inspired by the sweet theme) the other mac os like didnt bc it was for an old version.

also tried override individual colors, either i did something wrong or not idk but it didnt change much either.. im clueless about this one
