TIL about KDE Brightness

I was playing around with KDE in a VM (using HDMI w/Nvidia 1660), and was greeted with my monitor dimming (something I’d forgotten about). After I returned to my main system, I had forgotten to turn off the VM.

So far, so good…

However, my main system (using Display Port w/Nvidia 4060) was noticeably dimmer than I was used to (no dimming by default with Sway). After realizing that my VM was still running, I shut it down…and my brightness was fixed.

I would have never guessed that screen brightness was actually being controlled by the monitor and not the GPU.

I disabled DDC on my monitors since software control never worked right on any machine I was using. Including the Mac I used for work.

OK, disabled DDC on both monitors, KDE is no longer a problem. Well, maybe still a problem as I had to tweak PowerDevil as it was taking a dump during bootup, trying desperately to setup DDC (even though I had disabled it).
