Testing Plasma 6 (Beta) on Endeavour OS - is this approach any good?

They were present even with nothing open.
Both work as they should.
Both can be removed.

I reported the spontaneous widget; if @chalex20 thinks his case is related, please add your info the the report here:

Hmm, I just noticed I have two dolphin icons w/o having the file manager open. I wonder if it’s the same root issue as the peek one?
Maybe I’m dreaming…now I only have one (was doing an update when I got that).

Hmmm, I’ve had these dreamlike moments as well, where there was a Kate icon in my panel that I did not remember putting there. As the icon disappeared again later I thought I was seeing things. But I’ve also “dreamed” of other icons appearing and disappearing.

Perhaps we are onto something?

This is great news, thanks @d-air1 :raised_hands: I’m so looking forward to this feature.

(Newton should never have invented gravity; I dropped my laptop. Casing in tatters. Have glued it together. Watching the glue dry. Will then resume testing.)

Can you folks add favorite applications to your application menu? For some reason that option is missing for me.

I have no favorites category in my menu either.

(Duct tape beats glue, BTW.)

I dropped my laptop a couple of years ago…there was no way the pieces would run again. Moral of story, mobile devices better be impact resistant (my Kindle has been dropped multiple times…so far so good). I don’t do laptops any more (costly).

True.
And they don’t bounce well. :person_shrugging:t4:

But i have no place to put a desktop pc, and as i am not a “heavy user” i make do with low end, budget laptops. If possible I refurbish an old laptop that was discarded by someone in the family.

Mini pc like “intel nuc” is maybe the answer. The market is full of low cost mini pc now :yum:

So, I just tested out KDE Plasma 6.1 on KDE Neon. It’s built on QT 6.6. It seems that all of the issues that I’m having on Plasma 6.0 RC2 are QT 6.7 related, like the KDE Devs alluded to. I hope the issues with QT 6.7 gets fixed before Plasma 6 is released or Arch is going to be a second class citizen for Plasma 6 for a while.

That’s good to know. Thanks for trying this out and reporting here.

No problem. I’m kind of concerned, since KDE Plasma is my preferred desktop and I’ve been using it on EndeavourOS for years. I’m hoping that the transition to Plasma 6 in EndeavourOS will be smooth. However, basing the Arch/EndeavourOS version of Plasma 6 on QT 6.7 beta instead of using the stable QT 6.6 like other distributions and the Plasma developers are using seems unnecessary. Hopefully, this will all pan out in the end, since Plasma will eventually need to move to QT 6.7.

Thanks for the suggestion. But I like to lie on my back on the couch, or to sit in the garden, weather permitting, when I’m “working”

Looking at the release schedule [1] I’m seeing:

Dependencies

Plasma Version Qt Version KDE Frameworks Version
6.0 6.6 6.0
6.1 6.6 (or 6.7?) 6.2

And

Version Post release Version Type Tar Date Release Date Comments
6.1.0 Release Thu 2024-06-13 Tue 2024-06-18
6.1.1 Bugfix Release Tue 2024-06-25

So, will arch be a “a second class citizen” (as you say) until at least mid June 2024, do you think?

Afaik Plasma 6.0 will be released with qt 6.6 on Arch, atleast initially.
The reason qt 6.7 is used in unstable is that Arch is rolling release and probably will get 6.7 soon after it gets released. So it makes sense that it gets tested aswell.
See the schedule for Qt here: https://wiki.qt.io/Qt_6.7_Release

@SemLraug I believe you posted the MINIMUM required qt version, not what is actually gonna be shipped with distros.

I am very excited about the new Plasma6. You have all reinstalled Plasma6, i.e. on a fresh system. I, on the other hand, still have all Plasma5 plasmoids activated. So I will deactivate all Plasma5 plasmoids, use a standard Breeze theme, update to Plasma 6 and then look around for working Plasma 6 plasmoids. This procedure will, I think, reduce the system to minimal errors.
