System freezes sometimes

I was playing Minecraft and after around an hour the entire system froze.
The problem was fixed with installing some performance mods, but I want to know what I could do to prevent this with other games.
So people smarter than me can help you forward

The problem was solved by switching to the linux zen kernel.
