System freeze, how to figure out why?

My desktop PC (AMD 9950X3D, Nvidia RTX 5080, Asus ProArt X870E, recently installed EOS with KDE) freezes from to time, like once a week. The screen gets frozen, the sound disappears, not reacting to mouse/keyboard, so have to reboot via the reset button. Can happen in idle or under load.

journalctl usually has this error about PCIE at the very end, nothing else:

So not sure what’s this device. Could it be the Nvidia GPU?

For the GPU? nvidia-open, I think these are the only ones that support 50xx.
It was during the last 2-3 months, so there were multiple updates.

Yeah, but it was not the first one in the log.

I guess it’s like the whole lane(s) went down if it’s multiple devices, not just one specific device?

You should be aware that, if the system freezes, the newest part of jounal (volatile!) has no chance to get written to the disk/file. If you cannot force a crash-dump or similar, I think you cannot see, what is going on…
I’ve had a similar problem here, if the watchdog forces random reboots - no log, never.
Sorry for making things more worse…

Edit: Can you check if it is EOS-specific? Will other sys (non Arch for example) run ok?

Maybe the really last entries are missing, but I am pretty sure these pcieport things are related to the freeze.

The latest BIOS version for this motherboard is 1715, released as of 2025/09/25, just a week ago.

inxi -M should tell you which version is actually installed. In case you haven’t considered to check that.

I’ve had incredibly similar freezes on 2 separate laptops running EndeavourOS KDE Plasma 6 on Wayland. Encountered it ~once a month on an ASUS Zenbook from 2018 (Intel CPU + Nvidia 1650 max-q dGPU) as well as ~once a week on a brand new all-AMD Lenovo ThinkPad P1s.

Basically when this happens, all input freezes up, sometimes replaying the last key I’ve pressed and/or the last audio from my speakers. I’ve had a YT video keep playing during the freeze as well as my last key being forever repeated in vscode, leading me to assume it’s more of an input issue than a graphics issue. Once I even had all input devices stop working except my trackpad, which I was able to use to reboot my laptop. Every other time I had to hard reset. I’ve never been able to get to a TTY when this happens.

For me, this only happens if I’m doing something non-intensive, like scrolling in vscode or reading pages in a browser. Never happens when playing a game.

I’ve also tried to look for causes in logs and tried adding kernel boot parameters but couldn’t find a fix or anything indicative

an LLM suggested to disable PCI-E ASPM, so I did that in UEFI (and checked via dmesg | grep -i aspm, lspci -vvv | grep -A5 -B5 -i aspm) and the issue seems to not occur anymore.
