Switching from Cinnamon to Gnome using eos-packagelist

HELP please …

I have been using Cinnamon for a week or two with a new install.

However, i had a few things i didn’t like so i decided to switch to GNOME.

I found this post (obviously!).

I’ve just done:

eos-packagelist --install GNOME-Desktop

It ended cleanly so i did a reboot expecting to see an option to select GNOME but …

All i got was the same prompt for EndeavourOS (fallback thing) that i got before.

Now i freely admit that when i used your eos-packagelist utility i did not stand to attention and sing Jerusalem, so is that what i've done wrong?

Or have i missed something?

Any help old man very grateful.

…gone doing bins - i may be some time

What

Sorry, i couldn’t find the “Engage humour chip” highlight.

Is there something else i should have done as well as running the eos-packagelist utility?

Have i missed a step?

Did i do something wrong?

What else should i have done?

Which DM (login screen)? There should be an option somewhere on there to change to gnome.

There should be an option to switch somewhere on the screen. It is a bit non-obvious in lightdm if I remember correctly.

If you want, you can switch to gdm with:

sudo systemctl enable gdm.service --force

i have just done that enable and there seems to be no change.

Unless i need to reboot for it to take effect …

Explanation:

A few days ago i wondered exactly when i had installed my system.

In looking i wrote a little script to display that and a few other things, including:

echo " Desktop Environment is: " $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP
echo " This should concur: "$(ls /usr/bin/*session)

That displays the following both before and after i did (pasted) the “systemctl enable” command you mentioned.

Output:

Desktop Environment is: X-Cinnamon
This should concur: /usr/bin/cinnamon-session /usr/bin/dbus-run-session /usr/bin/gnome-session

Sorry but all i got when i login, i.e. when i reboot, is:

No mention of GNOME … nor Cimmanon for that matter.

Yes, you need to reboot.

Not the grub/systemd boot menu - the gui window where you enter your password.

OK, tbh i decided to quit last evening and feed my diabetes instead … switching off my system.

Today, drum roll please, i got a different enter password - yes, GNOME.

Thank you Dalto.

Just a shame i quickly started to hate it!

Not keen on a few things but my like of ISO dates was quickly recurrent.

Still, now that i know about theeos-packagelist utility (and OFC not needing to stand to attention and sing Jerusalem) i can easily switch to XFCE ... i know, but i am old and i really don't need, or ever liked, the flashy bits.

Thanks for your help … that goes for everyone who has even looked at my ponderings.

Sorry Xircon, sorted (see dalto reply) but for the record, no grub menu, when rebooted i did get the password menu but it looked the same as before using the switch environments util … that was last night.

However, today (after being powered off) i did get a markedly “different” password screen, which led to GNOME - which i don’t like btw, guess it’s an acquired taste.

Thanks though.

Addendum

And it came to pass …nah, decided i didn’t like xfce (reminded me too much of Windows for Workgroups 3.11)

So i went hoping around the different versions, yes, all of them.

Finally i came to Cosmic

Frankly i loved it at first sight - what did someone say about not liking the flashy bits?

However, sorry, there really is a “however”.

I seemed to have to tell the File Manager multiple times that i prefer date order;

I really don’t like this modern trend to, presumably, “protect” users from themselves by not showing system files. Yes, you can get round it but it’s an unnecessary pain in my opinion;

No way to remove, or alter the order of, items added to the sidebar of the FM (what others refer to as “bookmarks”;

No dividers, section headers, or even just a line, in the sidebar of the FM for added to sidebar items (dividers for rubbish and network though)

No ISO dates in FM;

No insert date in text editor (ideally in the format i prefer please) - got GNOME vers though;

…sorry

That’s just a vent although possibly an FYI too.

i think i’m sticking with Cosmic as i am enjoying the ride.

Many thanks to everyone here.

Runs off to brag about first util i got AI to write for me.

#thinks#

I should prob copy that list to a Cosmic forum.

Cosmic is relatively new so it is less mature then the others.

You could consider using a different file manager if that is your biggest blocker.

Thanks Dalto, yes, that’s an option but TBH i’m loving the whole feel of Cosmic.

Although I prob will switch FM’s before too long :))

I don’t suppose you, or anyone, knows if Cosmic has a forum …other than within insta?

BTW, i’m not a little girl, so …

If you go to the bottom of this page, they have a list of their communities.

I think mattermost and reddit are probably the closest to a forum.

Thanks for that, they have a contact form!

I’ll dump my thoughts on them … and thanks ofc.

I’ve already switched to Thunar (it has “computer” bookmark for the grown-ups) and xed is there for the taking so i’m a happy bunny.

< i’ll worry about the space i’ve wasted with all the DE’s i’ve loaded later >

Probably no more than 1 GB combined. DEs aren’t that big actually. For instance, KDE’s biggest package is just the wallpapers :laughing:
