Steam failing to open

oh mb i misunderstood! give me a sec

i did openttd and it works, so now im super confused

just for reiteration steam did lauch for the first time, just not since

Not sure if I understand, so let’s clarify.

  • After following the guide, did Steam launch successfully in Wayland?
  • If it didn’t, and it only launched successfully in X11, were you able to play any games?
  • If you weren’t, did you then install Gamescope and use the given launch options within Steam, not in the terminal?

openn ttd worked, i installed that from console
when i first installed linux i did exerything i needed to, installed steam, and it ran, when i restarted my pc the issues happened, same thing happened in fedora, first run worked, but not afterwards.
the guide did not fix anything, nor did x11
i hope that didnt sound rude, isnt supposed to

It didn’t sound rude, but you could instead say that “the issue persists” or “same issue” to make sure it can’t be interpreted as rude.

Also, what is “openttd” or “open ttd”? This is the second time you’ve typed that.

Now, it seems there is some issue that I can’t quite spot, and you said you had the same issue on Fedora… I’m guessing this is either BIOS- or kernel-related, or just some unstated pebkac that’s causing the issue.

Try the below, then reboot and select the LTS kernel from the boot menu:

sudo pacman -Syu linux-lts linux-lts-headers

Then run this command (BEFORE REBOOTING):

  • You will get an error if you don’t use GRUB, and if you know you don’t use GRUB, then just skip this step.
sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg

Another possible issue is KDE+Nvidia. It’s not a great combination for some people, which is why I no longer use KDE. So, you can try Hyprland instead for gaming specifically.

I use Cinnamon, Openbox, and i3 for my day to day, and use Hyprland for gaming since it works pretty much perfectly. No launch options needed for any of my games so far.
Example games: Cyberpunk, Days Gone, Control, Weird West, Akane, Kill the Crows, etc.

Follow these two links for installing and using Hyprland if you are willing to go this route:
Arch Wiki: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Hyprland
Hyprland Nvidia Notes: https://wiki.hyprland.org/Nvidia/

i will say i noticed fedora had a kernal issue on fedora, when it freezed the caps lock light didnt work

openttd is the game i tested, also kde was just reccomended by my partner, if it has issues with nvidia im really happy you mentioned that! also i do use grub so ill give that a shot!

i did the lts, no dice, and then i tried cinnamon and still no. my partner said hyprland is difficult, and if i cant even get steam working idk if i wanna do that

Did you try Cinnamon (Wayland) or CInnamon (X11)?

As I mentioned, it may be a BIOS issue, or even a combination of things.
Your BIOS hasn’t been update since April 2024, but it looks like it can be according to the following link: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/PRO-Z790-P-WIFI/support

BIOS updates can be done by following the guide below or through Windows if you still have it installed on your device.

PS: Hyprland isn’t actually “difficult”. It just requires a little more reading than using something like KDE or Cinnamon.

For me, I just installed it to test if it works. It did. Sometime after, I started having issues launching Steam games under X11, and I used Gamescope for a bit. Then that started giving trouble, and I tried Hyprland. All good now.

try uninstalling and then reinstalling steam, use pacman

e.g.

pacman -R steam

pacman -Sy steam

Then create a new user account, reboot and log in to that account, and start steam there.

Does steam start then?

Also try installing steam-native-runtime as well and running steam-native, see if that helps if the above didn’t do the trick.

If the new user account trick works, it’s a user configuration issue, means there’s something under ~/.config or ~/.local or something along those lines that’s causing the issue.

i did the bios update, mad sure to turn off secure boot and the windows fast start thingy etc no luck with that

With all the technical things out of the way, and your system being more than capable of running Steam and most games, then it pretty much has to be a pebkac issue.

One way to check is to create a new user account (for your Linux login, not Steam), and log into that, then try launching Steam, closing it, then relaunching. If it works, there’s something in your current/previous user settings causing the issue.

Another more drastic option is to reinstall the OS/distro entirely, but ensure you do not keep or copy any settings from a previous installation, because again, the settings are very likely causing the issue.

a new linux acc? ah i see

Yeah, a fresh unmodified linux user account has no (or just has default) user configuration, this is a common and effective trick to test if there’s a user configuration issue somewhere on the main account, it has saved me a couple of times.

other acc works, the only thing i did to my acc was change the theme so ima look at that real quick cause idk

not it

Oh, that means it’s just a KDE thing, then smh. Your change, but also not really your fault.

Just KDE and Gnome right now competing for who can be the best “macOS, don’t you dare customise me” clone.

Oh, wait. Spoke too soon. :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

That probably means there is some other small change that you made. Something you think is nothing, but is big for Steam, apparently.

In any case, if you don’t have a bunch of settings, you can just switch to the new user, but give it Root (admin) privileges by using the other user to do so. You can find the option to do so in System Settings for KDE.

Oh, and uninstall Cinnamon if you have both KDE and Cinnamon installed. Or keep Cinnamon and uninstall KDE. Pick one, not both, or they will cause issues with each other.

lmao

i set up firefox, messed with the system moniter, updated drivers, steam… i cant think of anything else

not too happy ab it but if it works it works

thank you for letting me know ab that!!

watch me mess something up again and have to redo all of this lmfao

In fact, if you don’t have much of anything installed apart from Steam, I’d recommend reinstalling from scratch. This will get rid of what will now be a bunch of unused folders and files from whichever DE you choose to delete.

OR

If you give the new user Root privileges, you can just delete the first one: problem solved.

The idea is to not have clutter in your config (settings) folders for any user.
This both saves space and prevents/limits issues.

Thank you so much mate!
