Steam doesn't start anymore since last system update

Good morning,

after upgrading my system last week I had the problem that Steam didn’t start anymore, which I realized when I wanted to play some games with some friends (V Rising). I couldn’t figure out the problem, so I rolled back to a BTRFS snapshot (all my mountpoints are snapshotted), and I could play.

I’ve tested the upgrade again today, and the same thing happened. Here’s the upgrade log:

Then it hangs, so it is in memory, but there’s no Steam GUI. I googled around and found this post which was already started in 2017, but still gets updates from people finding it the way I did.

Howver, this post suggest 2 options for Arch users that seem suspect to me:

One person installed the official NVidia drivers by downloading them from the NVidia web page and using the run shell script
Another person suggested installing lib32-nvidia-vulkan-utils, which is an AUR package

Both seem strange. The NVidia installation worked very well so far, and the NVidia driver seems to work on my system as well (tried glxgears as the post suggested). On the other hand, Steam from the official repositories depends on an AUR package? That doesn’t sound right to me.

I’ve checked the Arch bugtracker for Steam mentions but nothing looked like my problem.

I’ve been running Steam since I first switched to EOS and it’s never failed me. I am using an older Nvidia driver (v470 from the AUR) due to (1) game having graphical glitches, though:

But not from any Nvidia packages. Are all of your Nvidia packages at the same version level?

Ah, thank you, that led me the right way towards solving the problem. I have recently done maintenance work where I merged the .pacnew configuration files, and it looks like I commented out (or overwrote) my /etc/pacman.conf and multilib was commented out. I re-enabled it and updated the system, and Steam is starting again.
