Has anyone had weird experiences with steam in the last 20ish days? Specifically a sudden inability to uninstall anything and games that used to work suddenly hang indefinitely on the “Preparing to launch XXX” window?
My desktop is running just fine, it’s all business as usual. However, my laptop seems to only be able to run certain games. Things like Pillars of Eternity, Blood Rally, and Factorio all run as they always have but Wreckfest and PC Building Simulator never launch. I also cannot uninstall anything…
No proton versions changed, using other proton versions doesn’t have any effect, I’ve tried reinstalling steam, I’ve tried verifying game files, done the clear steam download cache thing… I’d say it was steam just being weird but it seems to only be affecting my laptop
While nothing horribly breaking on my end, the tray icon is either blank or gone entirely and it hangs sometimes if I try to navigate pages in the client. I assumed it’s the UI changes and stuff they’re doing.
I am on beta, I’ll try going back to stable and see if that fixes it! Can’t believe that wasn’t one of my ideas lol, I’m so used to beta basically just being the ‘up-to-date’ stable version of steam
I’ve done that before… I can’t figure out where I got the info of how to go about it now lol.
Native games are easy but I remember there was a specific trick for outputting debug info from Proton titles to the terminal
It looks like this if the steam client itself is already running. Anyway, there are no errors.
I had a similar behavior with Dishonored some months ago btw; i had to start this game with an older proton version to get it running. Maybe try something like this, i am out of ideas.
I have actual error info now! I dont know how or why or what I did different, but it looks like some sort of wine mismatch, and a running server that shouldn’t be which also would explain the issue I’m having where I cant close steam, uninstall anything, or properly launch things using proton.
Now how to fix this?

Can you please ensure that no other Wine processes are running? Look up wineserver in your tasklist and kill it if there’s an active process. Then try launching Steam normally and using it.
I’ve tried both steam (runtime) and steam (native), no other wine processes or servers are running besides the ones that steam initiates when I try to launch a game. From a cold boot, opening steam, and immediately clicking “Play” on Wreckfest, steam launches 3 wineserver instances.
Two of these instances seem to be tied together, if I kill one, the other dies with it. The third wineserver instance seems to be separate; it can be killed without the others noticing and taking down the other two does not affect the third.
Wine itself is not even installed on my machine, by which I mean if I use pamac to search for wine it shows as not installed. So anything wine-related is only being launched by steam.
It seems like this is all on steams end, but everything works just fine on my identically up-to-date endeavourOS desktop so something specific to my laptop is just not happy with a change made in the last month-ish…
You want Steam (Runtime). All of those Wine instances are the same, that’s all good then.
If you’re using Pamac to update your system, I’d highly suggest against it.
Could you please right-click on the game, go to properties, compatibility and force the game to use a Proton version you know isn’t installed? Let Steam install it for you and see if it hangs again.
Oh I absolutely don’t use pamac for updates lol, I just find it helpful for visually searching for applications or installed packages
I ran steam-runtime from the terminal so that I’d get feedback, dropped Wreckfest down to use Proton 5.13-4 (it was using Experimental). Clicked play and steam downloaded the new Proton needed, then hung on the screen:

It was running some install script by the looks of it, you can let it hang for a good while. It’s likely not displaying full output at the moment. You can try launching Steam with --error depending on where your launch script is. For example, mine’s /usr/lib/steam/steam --error
You can also try installing wine-staging to see if it’s calling for a missing dependency?
Adding the --error flag did not give any additional data beyond what it was giving me before. I’m letting it hang while I do other work right now but when I attempted to install wine-staging I did get some dependencies that were not already on the system:
