Sound issues, but also forced shutdown problems

So I’ve been messing around with EOS for a while now.
My first install was going great, then it seemily died.

The same problem persisted in the second reinstall and I figured out it was lightdm /greeter not starting.
Lesson learned.
I fixed that and all was good(ish) again.

But as I fixed minor niggles more things broke, but it wasn’t until a restart would they be apparent, so often a few things would break at once.
somehow i ended up with 4 kernels and 4 fall back kernels.
As things would break, I’d jump on a new kernel and continue trying to learn, fix and understand the OS.

I did learn a lot but I’ll admit I’m still quite the novice.
I’ve dabbled with Linux in the past but most of my proper learning has been on EOS.
I want to stay on EOS, as a daily driver and get the games i like to play working on it properly/working.

So jumping forward, I have not only managed to break all 8 EOS kernel options in my (old) boot (systemd).

One of the issues I started having, which still persists on the LiveEOS and now on my third iteration of EOs is when my keyboard is running on wireless…
When not used it goes in to powersave, when i start using it again, it will register one keystroke and then shutdown the system.
I searched for a long time and there was no where with quite this problem.
I ‘think’ I traced it to the power save state of the USB ports.

other things I tried.
#gamemoderun would often fix this.
#powermode balanced (/performance) would often fix this.
Interestingly in some kernels the system wouldn’t shut down when the issue arose but instead the desktop would crash in places and I would sign out and sign back in and it would no longer be broken until a system restart.
I can quickly cause the issue by switching my keyboard from bluetooth to wired and back to bluetooth, system restarts or shuts down.

I’m also having issues with my sound too, when I first log on (auto logon) I will have no sound.
I can fix this by logging out and logging in manually, I later discovered I can go in to sound settings, turn the audio off on my nvidia card and turning back on again.

This is my first post, usually I muddle on and search the net and try to fix all my problems under my own voialition, but my track record of doing that on linux can and has lead to a total OS fail.

I wiped and formatted my entire boot drive, fresh installed windows, then fresh installed EOS, this time using the fancier KDE plasma desktop.
I’ve done very little with windows install and to EOS, only the basics I’ve learned from my last two installs of EOS.

There was a time during my first install that neither the forced shut down or sound issues existed, so i’m confident it can be fixed.
I also don’t have these issues on windows.

My hardware is also very highend.

Right now, its working very well, even getting proton GE working quite well considering how bad my last two attempts at it were, but I am somewhat apprehensive to experiment with potential fixes using my limited Linux skillset.

So here I am, asking the wonderful community for advice, can somebody please help me?

What logs are needed, and what commands do i need to use to fetch them?
If you need more info, no problem.

Thanks,

          Crow.

Seems like you have been up to quite a lot. I’m not sure about the sound, logout, stuff, but at the very least for proton-ge. There is a tool called ProtonUpQt that easily installs that for you. No need for manually doing any of that.

Thanks for that, I did have a cheat sheet of commands i had been creating in a text document, but that was one of the few things I lost when the second install failed.
Which log commands might be relevant to my issues?

My proton ge is working fine at the minute, I’ll look in to your suggestion if somethings breaks or could be better, although I’ll probably use yay and repeat my last actions first.

Thanks for your input though.

Good afternoon,
The journal is where i get all my info when i have some hick ups.
$ journalctl -S 2023-10-17 (the working day of the crash … is my favorite way of using it)
$ man journalctl (if you would like to use other switches - like the other members of the forum)
For example, one machine was acting up with the “nouveau” driver and I was discerning the problems because the messages were written in “red” …

Since you have powerful hardware you might just want to keep a peep on the temperatures - it doesn’t cost much effort. In example : I open a terminal and write in it this command:
$ watch sensors

You can build your “emergency toolbox” by reading some threads with causes - versus solutions - on the forum with quick searches on top of the screen. I mark mine in a paper and pencil ledger near my machines.

That’s a great way to check the sensor temps, thank you.
My temps are great though, CPU temps are at 18c, my southbridge runs a little warm, but at 44C its considered ideal for this board.
I also have an on board led that displays POST codes, but displays average temp once the board is done with POST, average temp is 24C.
I’m confident its not my temps.

I often read the forums/web and have a good memory, not so much for memorising countless commands, but I remember the gist of what I read and simply re-search for the posts I read previously, I bookmark the good stuff and on my last install I was building a cheat sheet of all the best and most useful commands relevant to me, i’m currently rebuilding my cheatsheet which I now store on my old platter drive.

With the help of my upper arrow on the keyboard, I went back in the history to find the day of the crash with the red information inside the journal.
$ journalctl -S 2023-09-27
I made you a screenshot as an example.
After that finding, I remembered Mr. Dalto’s recommendation to a multiple of users like us, that very old BIOS software doesn’t help. I proceeded with an update on that old 2½ year BIOS and the problem in the journal never showed up again.
In general, users like us can repair quite well our computing machinery with the information on the forum.
Take care,
François

edit: I use ctrl + f (forward) and ctrl + b (backward) just like in VIM to inspect inside the journal.

it seems my keyboard is acting like a power button press when it enters active power state when using the wireless dongle, can any one confirm this and offer solutions?

Bumping with new info, i’m using the zen kernel at the minute after I found a similar issue online in regards to the shutting down problem, in that thread they suggested doing a full ubuntu update.
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/635797/using-laptop-keyboard-shuts-down-computer.

Although this was for versions before 5.11

So figured I’d use a newer kernel anyway…
this is what is current…
[crow@rogo ~]$ uname -r
6.5.7-zen2-1-zen
my problems persists.
journalctl displays pretty much what my previous log says about the error.

I’ve poured about a total of 24 hours into the shutdown problem that’s been going on for weeks now.

Gamemoderun no longer stops this issue using my current kernels/EOS.
I also don’t have the powermode I was using in my 2nd install of EOS, couldnt find it, perhaps its not kde plasma compatible.
Nothing I do seems to fix it anymore other than connect the keyboard to a wire.

Journalctl is also littered with many other red and yellow warnings I haven’t even looked in to yet.
Although my current install is pretty fresh and untampered with, it’s just a mess underneath the hood.

I’m starting to lose the love for EOS.
There is a lot of love, but it feels like an abusive relationship.

Does it do that on other distros when using it that way. I would guess that is a problem with that specific keyboard.

What is powermode? Are you referring to power-profiles-daemon? Also for the forced shutdown have you checked for power supply issues? EOS uses arch packages, so I would assume anything that goes wrong here. Would go wrong on any arch based distro. That is why also suggested seeing if it happens on another distro. If it happens on say ubuntu or fedora then maybe it is hardware related.

If not then perhaps we can identify differences between a distro that works and one that doesn’t such as kernel versions and stuff like that.

I thought I had sent this, but nope, it my in my draft still…
Power modes, I found in the power settings gui on KDE Plasma in a drop down menu, on XFCE their equivalent gui/widget was different, on my last install I think I had installed power-profiles-daemon and was using commands to switch the modes but also had a panel widget displaying the mode and letting me switch from there too.
As for jumping on another distro, I’m still learning EOS, and most of my linux knowledge is on EOS, I can understand the cross over concepts and relationships of the linux distros but really don’t want to have to jump through all the hoops of installing and learning a new distro to see what problems or distractions that throws at me. I also don’t want to clutter up my boot drive and efi entries with unwanted stuff as I’ve just clean formatted everything and wanted to keep it minimal to my requirements.
I sank a load of time just looking as to which distro to switch to from windows.
I don’t get the sound issues or the wireless keyboard shutting down windows when it wakes up back up or gets switched to wireless.

My current thinking is it’s either…

  1. usb ports coming out of low power is causing system shut down.
2.wireless keyboard is sending a shutdown command when it powers up.
  2. bios settings not correct for how linux wishes to manage idle/low power states.
  3. a security or system policy set to shut down the system, is being triggers by something.
    5.something to do with systemd
  4. wrong .config settings

I recently noticed that after when it shuts down, when it restarts it bi-passes the boot options and boots me in to the same kernel i was in before the shutdown event happened.

What is also frustrating is, the key words i need to use to web search the issue just lists random unrelated issues about unrelated pc problems.

When i first started using EOS, none of the problems existed, I did originally use GRUB i think, which is further reasoning that it might be a systemd issue or script triggering the shut down.

I didn’t mean you needed to switch to another distro, but just try one on a bootable flash drive without installing and see if the keyboard issue still occurs.

Yeah, that happens a lot when no one knows the cause of something and you have to search the symptoms.

I almost gave up on EOS but then I decided to take the all or nothing approach and got brave messing with it again.
I took a break from these two problems and worked on other issues.
Managed to break my systems more than once but managed to quickly recover.
Somewhere along the way the forced shut down issue went away.
I’m not sure what I have done as I was working on many little things since my last post.
I did notice that before it went away I could power up in bluetooth keyboard mode and it would work fine switching between wireless and usb connections.
A reboot in usb keyboard mode would bring the problems back.
Booting in wireless mode but then removing and reinserting the wireless dongle would cause a force shut down.

The sound issues seem to only be happening very intermittently now, usually either it will crash a streaming video buffer or happen when I launch a game, but it’s not very often and I cant reproduce the issue on demand.

I’m going to try and focus on what the sound issue is for now as that still happens occasionally and figure it might be an easy fix, given how simple it is to recover from it.

The sound issues I still get, very infrequently.
Below is a list of commands related to providing temporary fix and information.
The only nuance i believe is you should have the socket running before the service. Otherwise very safe to play with.
Restarting the service is usually the fix but others can be helpful.

systemctl --user status pipewire-pulse.socket
sudo systemctl --user stop pulseaudio.service
systemctl --user restart pipewire-pulse.socket
sudo systemctl --user start pipewire-pulse.service
systemctl --user restart pipewire.service

to fix the random shut downs I basically removed all power related keyboard shortcuts.
And set my own custom ones.
I was still getting the issue outside of the session though, I traced this to power shortcuts related to SDDM, so in the settings gui I searched SDDM, and found an option to view and delete these shortcuts.

To properly fix the sound I think I need to either mess around with the kernel and how the nvidia driver plays with it, or its something to do with how streaming players handle fullscreen and pip windows playing sound.

It’s so very infrequent now and easy to rectify that I am going to mark my problems as solved even if the audio could be a little less jank.
