So I been using KDE for a bit now, and while I like it generally, there is one thing that is absolutely infuriating to me: some parts of the OS are just not translated to (in my case) German.
To showcase, this is my kickoff menu clearly showing a mix between German and English.
I am aware that according to i10n, some parts of the translation are still being worked on, also probably including the above pictures. However, with Plasma constantly adding new things like folder symbols or transitioning to wayland, I (personally me, Squiggy) feel like having a consistent userspace falls kinda short and gets less priority than it should have.
Please don’t tell me to just “do it yourself instead of complaining” since I’m not a KDE dev or anything, just a user who’d like to experience a consistent desktop environment.
So what do I do? Just wait until the translation team bothers working on those lines?
If the reply is to “just be patient”, I’m fine with that kind of answer I’m just confused as to why 30-40% of my “next generation desktop” isn’t even translated to my language. I’ve checked google, the locale files and even redone em manually prior to writing this.
I wonder that this might provide you with some answers?
To summarise, the German translation (among others) is community driven. Sometimes the translation is incomplete, and bugs can be reported.
There is quite a German community here though. Some I expect would have first hand experience with this and may be able to offer some clearer insights. You may want to mention “German” in your title to help grab their attention?
That thread derailed into a discussion about grammar, AI and punctuation - gave me a good laugh tho.

To also reply to the post above; what I got from this is that those strings are just not translated (yet) and either I translate it myself or wait for the community to do it.
Also, don’t mind me not getting along with the forum features…
Right, let’s theorize that I’m unable to speak/read English, only German - in that scenario, I’m also unable to aid with the translation.
Let’s furthermore say I’m new to linux and want to check it out, but cannot do that due to missing translations and have rely on google or whatever translation service is available just to be able to understand basic system settings.
I’ve stated before that translating the missing lines is not an option for me and I don’t want to take this kind of responsibility and work onto myself I’m just an end-user who would like to experience a consistent UI.
Mint has a thing which checks the system for missing language files - is there nothing similar for KDE…? Might be farfetched.
Again, if the reply is to just “wait until it’s translated” in my case, that is an answer I can live with ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
At least that way I can rule out that I may or may not have made an error myself.
Participating is the quickest way to get it done, otherwise it’s “wait until it’s translated” - which - if it’s an hidden option - may take a long time.
