@dirn, Maine Coons are trendy right now so demand is high, driving prices up. They used to be just big ol’ northern climate cats, similar to Norwegian Forest and Siberian Cats.
Everything Milkytwix said is spot on. We got our first Maine Coon a long time ago, before they got popular, because at the time we were planning to live on a sailboat. (I’d lived on a sailboat for 2+ years before then.) Maine Coons have a purported history of being quite comfortable nautical cats, easily able to handle shipboard rodentia on wooden sailing vesses of days gone by. The reality is that any cat would probably help with pest control. Plus cats and boats go together like peanut butter and jelly.
We are fans of just about any member of Felidae, and we both have a thing for large cats. As Sir Mix-A-Lot once sang, “I like big cats and I cannot lie.” So a big, solid, square-bodied fur kid like a Maine Coon was inevitable for us.

Hah, I’m just amazed at how many of you are owned by cats. Do you suppose it’s a predominant Linux (or Arch) trait? We need a larger sample!
Today I learned I’m the only person here who doesn’t have a cat. 
After scrolling through the wonderful cuteness overload here I think it’s time I got one.

My Zoë (also a rescue cat) rarely purrs and when she does it is nothing like what your Moris is cranking out! I have way too many problems which interfere with me getting quality sleep. I’m jealous of Zoë’s ability to sleep so peacefully.
Oh my, my Jetboy is almost as loud as that at night. I turn off the lights and everything else, lay on my back, he climbs on my chest to get his bedtime loving and that motor goes into high gear. Not sure which of us enjoys that time more. have fell asleep with him right there too many times to count.
