At 74 years old, I completely understand this one.

“I’m living in the New World… with an Old Soul” Oliver Anthony

“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and loose his own soul.”

There’s a Balkan saying that, stylistically translated, says:

“Lucky are those who know they don’t know, but wish to know.”

Original:

“Blago onom ko zna da ne zna, a želi da zna.”

Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime

Can’t tell you the origin since it seems to be unclear and contested with multiple people and countries with varying variations claiming origin, but I will assume this is something many humans throughout history have said to some kind of degree as it makes sense or different phrases with the same meaning or many people using it simply never wrote it down to be found as evidence or any evidence is long gone.

Sadly, it is one of the quotes I hate the most.
It unfortunately encourages people not to help others when they have the means to help.
At least, that’s what I’ve observed.

It would be an otherwise awesome quote if humans didn’t suck.

PS: Technically, it’s not the quote I have a distaste for, it’s the scum who can help that use it so they have an excuse not to help.

I once came across what I find to be an improved variation…

Give a Man a Fish, and You Feed Him for a Day.
Teach a Man To Fish, and He Gets a Hook Stuck in his Eyelid.

It is helping isn’t it? I mean what better help can you give someone than to be dependent on themselves. If I always just give him a fish then when I go he wont be long after but If I teach him then he lives on. I fail to see where this is unhelpful?

That’s good, but not what I meant.
People who can help will say that quote and do neither. That’s the issue I have with them.

My perspective is different for it. I can see what you mean as well, the people pushing someone away “to figure it out themself” with no directions. Or in the case of Linux, telling someone to “read the wiki” with no context or where or what to look for is unhelpful.

While I learn as much as possible myself with everything and experiment, I also use that knowledge to try and help others at the same time and don’t really push people away. Sometimes I may provide information or show someone something but I also tell someone where to look so they can build more detail on it as I may not be available forever to help (I don’t necessarily mean I die), but they can ask questions if they are stuck as some things can get too complex otherwise.

In a similar way of how our parents teach us information or how to think independently of situations as children and build upon it as we grow to prepare for when we have to make our own choices (Hopefully preparation for good choices) but most parents still have no problem helping when you need them for support or advice.

To be honest it would have to be a Bible verse but I don’t know which one because they’re all so good/wise IMO. For this forum though I’d like to share this one just because it’s cool. I recently stumbled upon it and I thought it was inspiring.

Marilyn Manson:
I wouldn’t say a single word to them, I would listen to what they have to say and that’s what no one did.

one other from A Dog’s Purpose (2017):

“Have fun, obviously. Whenever possible, find someone to save and save them. Lick the ones you love. Don’t get all sad faced about what happened and scrunchy-faced about what could. Just be here now. Be. Here. Now. That’s a dog’s purpose.”

such a good movie IMO (I rewatched it today with my dog TBH as we both cuddled on the couch togethor)
