i3 is kinda like the fisher price/Duplo version of a TWM. Easy enough to configure, simple error messages. Lots of simple instructions out there. It’s definitely an adjustment though.
I tested a few, I even built my own BSPWM + Xfce Mashup once.
I definitely prefer BSPWM over other tiles, but I am really too comfortable with the mouse to wanting to switch.
That makes sense for sure. I’m not sure if I’ll stick with this or not. Especially since the machine I use all day for work is a Windows VM. It’s a bit interesting switching back and forth.
That sounds really interesting, can you share more? I’m a big BSPWM fan, but wish it had some features of XFCE and other floating wms (like titlebars, and more mouse control options).
That was back in mid 2018 I think, when I just started with Manjaro. And now their old forum is no more.
Basically it’s like when you run with Openbox instead of Xfwm, you make another window manager default in Xfce.
The main benefit is that you still have the excellent Xfce panel so you have an automatic workspace indicator, system tray and a few other things by default that hardly needs configuration.
What I remember was that my main problems were two after figuring out how to replace the window manager:
- It really wasn’t themeable easily (tho it had more to do with me not caring about dotfiles more than neccesary)
- The Whisker Menu worked but was treated like any other window, not a floating one, so you basically had a full screen app launcer like on Windows 8 or Deepin.
I had no end of fits trying to get xmonad and xfce to work nicely together. Oddly enough running an i3 session and an xfce session under the same user has been less of a headache
That’s actually not… uncommon. Arco Linux even have instructions on youtube how to do it, AFAIK.
Wow it’s like 8-10 months since I last was here - time flies ![]()

My town, currently under heavy wildfire smoke.
My old bspwm + sxhkd + rofi + bar setup on Manjaro (featuring a cool picture from the Wikipedia article on affine transformations)

I initially planned to recreate something similar / familiar after installing EndeavourOS, but modern features of xfwm4 + the Arc-Dark theme have really sucked me in… although I miss tiling and more modular programs a whole lot ![]()
My current desktop is still a work in progress, but will probably come out looking like a blend between the Manjaro and EndeavourOS defaults. Maybe I’ll try my hand at integrating bswpm more into XFCE, who knows.
I can never figure out all those smaller system info commands. Which one is that?

It’s just called sysinfo, I believe. Not a particularly unique name.

New EndeavourOS user here…
Given that the OS shares it’s name with one of the space shuttles, I though I’d do something with astronauts ![]()
That’s a smoking hot astronaut.
