Serious backlight flickering with AMD FreeSync enabled

Hello company

Since I had my new GPU (AMD RX9070XT), I had enabled the function AMD FreeSync for my monitor (MSI MAG27CQ), Unfortunately, this result with a serious backlight flickering very very annoying and eye burning… :-/

”The internet says”, this problem is “famous” with linux and wayland (true ?)

Question is simple, is there any workaround to fix it ?
Or should I need to switch back to X11 for this option ?
And on X11, how to enable this ? Because the function doesn’t appear on the display control pannel :-/

Many many thanks for any help

I am not sure if it is widespread or not but when you mentioned it I just noticed I am also seeing this issue. I am also using a 9070 XT.

The Arch wiki describes how to do that.

Just wanted to point out this section of the very same article on variable refresh rates, which recommends to use a Displayport connection. Your Monitor, at least from what I’ve found, doesn’t have HDMI 2.1, only an HDMI 2.0 port. VRR over HDMI would require HDMI 2.1.

I can’t speak for the OP but I am using a DP cable.

In my case, my RX 6600 does have a HDMI 2.1 output with VRR support. But my Monitor only has HDMI 2.0 inputs. When I activate adaptive sync via the Display settings of KDE Plasma, my display won’t flicker, but would turn off when I maximize windows.

Therefore, as my monitor doesn’t have a DisplayPort input, only an USB-C port with an alternate DisplayPort 1.4 mode, I simply don’t bother with it and disabled adaptive sync.
