I used a lot of Linux distros over the years, but the ones listed were the long term use distros that I kept coming back to and used many of them for years at a time. All other distros were used briefly and do not count since I always moved on or back to the ones on my list very quickly.

I havenā€™t used very many distros, when I find something I like, I usually stick to it, until I donā€™t like it any more.

Here is how I would rank all the distros Iā€™ve used for more than a week:

S tier: EndeavourOS, Arch
A tier: Fedora, Mint
B tier: Debian, Manjaro
C tier: ā€¦
D tier: Kubuntu, old Ubuntu with Unity DE
F tier: KDE Neon, Ubuntu (with Gnome)

So basically your ranking is arch/fedora/mint/debian>everything else except ubuntu>ubuntu

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up, based on my limited experience with distrohopping

I still need to try Gentoo, but Iā€™m saving that for when Iā€™m unemployedā€¦

Hannah Montana Distro should be at #2.

No one should ever put themselves through that much pain. . .

 I still have PTSD from that distro. I built a new back porch in the time it took to install Firefox, two days later.

Iā€™ve never even tried - but there was time I used to build ungoogled-chromium from the repos. . .

After 7-8 ā€œbuildsā€ I gave up and went back to firefox. That was enough compiling for me for a lifetime.

LOL. Yeah, even in Arch there are some hefty compile times for some of the apps. I think if I remember correctly, either Chrome or Firefox versions that arenā€™t (bin) take quite a while to build. I accidentally installed one of them by mistake, or tried to, again, curled up under my desk in a fetal position ā€œNo, please NOT Gentoo againā€¦make it stop!ā€ :ambulance:

I tried it again a couple of months ago.

It provides an amazing amount of control but you spend a lot of time compiling.

I used Gentoo as my daily driver distro for about 8 - 9 months.

It kept the apartment nice and warm in the winter, but when summer rolled around, it just heated the place up too much .

Letā€™s begin!
Distros I have used + An opinion by using pros and cons and might be better than a list from good to bad imho.

EndeavourOS
+Great arch based distro, probably the best I have ever used!
+Customize the distro the way you want.
+Great performance, no bloat after installation.
+Great forum, wholesome community, donā€™t eat a lot of turkeys.
+Also has a turkey bird in their forum. Gobble gobble!
-Since itā€™s basically vanilla arch with an installer, newbies will have a hard time getting used to this distro.
-Nvidia drivers tend to bug for some odd reason after installation. You may/may not encounter this issue.

ArcoLinux
+Another great arch based distro
+Great selection of ISOs
+Great wiki
+Good arch based distro for people who want a true stable Manjaro exprience
-Too many ISOs, strange naming scheme
-Ugly icon and wallpaper selection, not a big deal.

Pop!_OS
+Great distro for beginners
+Nvidia drivers out of the box, hybrid graphics capable too!
+No snaps out of the box, no bloatware.
-PPAs are a nightmare to deal with, not as easy as AUR.
-Cosmic extension is ugly out of the box. Needs more customization options.

Ubuntu
+Another great distro for beginners.
+Has a lot of software preinstalled , however if you are a newbie, you will be happy to have them.
+Backed by strong community.
+Comes in many flavors.
-Snaps are aā€¦snap!
-Same as Pop!_Os : PPAs are a nightmare.

Linux Mint
+Best distro for beginners.
+Awesome wallpapers.
+Best welcome app Iā€™ve ever seen on a ubuntu/debian based distro.
+Cinammon is a great windows-like DE, pretty powerful and is snappier than XFCE (at least for me)
-PPA nightmare like the other ubuntu based distros.
-Website needs some work (they are reworking the website design)
-Software manager is very barebones, feels empty.

Zorin OS
+A good distro for people who come from windows and want a familiar look.
+Good software out of the box.
+Nice layout tweaks.
+Zorin Lite for grandma pcs.
+Nvidia selection before booting into the live iso.
-Zorin Pro is not worth 40$. Maybe 20-25$, but I donā€™t want to pay for more layouts and bonus software. Itā€™s worth it if you want to support the company.
-PPA nightmare as always.

Manjaro
+A good arch based distro for beginners.
+Pamac out of the box, very easy to install stuff from the AUR.
+Comes in different ISO variants, including a minimal version of each DE.
+Mhwd is a blessing.
+Great integration with XFCE, KDE and Gnome.
+Great selection of themes.
-ā€œstableā€ release branch tends to break AUR programs. Some do work, others break. Be careful what you install.
-Too much green.
-Questionable history.

Salient OS
+Good arch based distro for gamers and multimedia consumption
+KDE looks great with the out of the box customization option. Gives windows 7 vibes
+Out of the box gaming tools
-Game Hub is not as good as Lutris
-Is borked, database does not refresh or update in the live iso (at least in my experience). Because of this it will wipe your ssd/hdd and leave you without an OS installed. (Use Ventoy and a backup distro in case this occurs)
-Tweaks donā€™t seem to give any benefits, might differ from hardware to another

Garuda Linux
+Probably a better version of Manjaro
+Same pros as Manjaro, except the themes
+Interesting themes distros and programs installed
+Good tweaks out of the box
-Direct links are unstable, sometimes the ISOs donā€™t download fully and instead crash midway through.
-Too bloated, even more than Manjaro standard ISOs
-XFCE edition is a mess

ElementaryOS
+Linux for MacOS users.
+Desktop looks very great, pretty intuitive.
+Touchpad gestures out of the box.
+Interesting ā€œpay what you wantā€ concept.
-Not so great for gaming, needs in depth tweaking.
-Distro updates take very long, usually they are worth it.

Drauger OS
+Best distro for gaming, hands down.
+XFCE, Xanmod and gaming tweaks out of the box.
-Ugly desktop layout out of the box.
-Best used for home made consoles, not so great for day to day usage.

PureOS
-Donā€™t even bother. Itā€™s buggy and only works if you enable Legacy Boot. Probably good for 32 bit only computers.
-Purism isnā€™t so trustworthy (allegedly)

Gobble gobble :turkey:

Edit : Added a few more distros.

Iā€™ve lost track of all the distros Iā€™ve tried over the years, but the ones that stand out:

The good:

  1. EndeavourOS for a rolling release distro.
  2. Linux Mint for a scheduled release distro.
  3. Mandrake. This was the distro I first fell in love with. Itā€™s a shame itā€™s discontinued. There is an offshoot (Mageia Linux) that I havenā€™t tried.

The bad:

  1. ElementaryOS. Itā€™s a pretty distro. However, the DE (Pantheon) is extremely ā€œtake it or leave itā€ in terms of customization. And ā€“ without Pantheon, it is pretty much Ubuntu.
  2. Deepin. Again pretty (very pretty) but not ā€œflexibleā€ enough for me to use on a daily basis. Kinda like Windows in that regard.

The ugly:

  1. Linux From Scratch. I think everybody should attempt LFS at least once in their computing career. Even if they donā€™t succeed, theyā€™ll develop an appreciation for the work that goes into developing and maintaining a distro.
  2. Gentoo. While I like flexibility and customization ā€“ it is possible to go too far.

  1. LibraNet (long since RIP)
  2. Debian
  3. EndeavourOS
  4. KDE Neon
  5. Void

  1. Garuda (sorry, but it has grown on me over EndeavourOS)
  2. EndeavourOS
  3. Linux Mint Debian Edition - IMHO, better than both the main Mint and vanilla Debian - the best of both worlds in the Debian and its derivatives universe.
  4. Void Linux - Dances to the beat of a different drummer, but pretty cool.
