Can someone explain in simple idiot terms what the difference is as they both say general chit chat? 
Maybe lounge is like techonology related stuff? And pub is like completely off-topic?

Lounge is actually the head category and pub, like hello, is the sub-category of the Lounge. Through time the head category is used for everything.

In a pub yau can get plastered, and it’s ok. That’s not at all welcome in a lounge.
