Proton Games Won't Load

Great! Maybe that was what caused the issue the first time.

What exactly are we looking at here? Video settings in game or tuning you did to get better fps?

So AC3 took forever to install, and all seemed well, but it opens to a black screen and then closes. Any ideas?

Have you tried editing options within Lutris dashboard? My sims 3 kept opening to a black screen and then closing. Till I realised I had to disable a certain setting. DXVK/VKD3D (I think)

Also, are you getting any warning errors when opening lutris up? Eg any warnings about drivers being out of date…

Eta: Or certain features not being available because of drivers being out of date…

Thank you. Unchecking DXVK worked. Is that an issue with the game or DXVK? Maybe it will get fixed with future DXVK updates?

You’re welcome.

Also I reckon it’s a driver/DXVK issue, but I could be wrong. But my reasoning is that when ever I open Lutris I get a warning about my drivers being out of date (GPU unsupported by latest 440/450 drivers) The warning also then mentions something about DXVK not working as a result. Which is why I figured out that, that option probably needed toggling in my game options to get my game running.

I’m not near my laptop at the moment though, so can’t check the exact message I get when opening lutris up. But I’m sure it was something along those lines…

Although, as AC3 and TS3 are older games maybe that’s why the DXVK option makes then unplayable…

ETA: Or maybe Lutris dislikes games that are 3rd in a series  In all seriousness though, I’m glad you’ve got AC3 working. Its a good game… I was watching Brother Bear the other day with my younger sister and it made me think of revisiting AC3.

I’m pretty sure it must be this.

Thank you for all of your help.

What controller drivers are you using? I have a Nvidia shield controller and I am able to connect it, bit the left joystick and d pad seem to be stuck in the up position. At least on ac3. Is there a setting I can change or a driver I need to install?

I think it should still work unless your GPU is REALLY old, see here, i wonder what it says

That full black screen crash usually indicates some problems with driver / vulkan, according to Lutris / protondb DXVK should work with this game just fine (and it’s extremely rare that it don’t with any game)

However, if other games work fine with DXVK, please report bug to DXVK for game in question

  • It is highly suggested to install ErrorTrap, Traveler and Overwatch mods by nRaas to improve game’s stability.

Also that might suggest that there are problems with game itself in that case, according to Lutris

Thanks for response. I’m at work at the moment. So will load up lutris/laptop once I’m back home. Though for reference the GPU on my laptop is old it’s an Nvidia GT650M and I’m 90% sure it says something about DXVK not working as a result of outdated drivers.

I don’t connect any controllers to any of my setups. I prefer keyboard and mouse. So I’m afraid I can’t help you here

That’s a pity, seems you’re out of luck :frowning:

DXVK gives some heavy performance boost and better compatibility than stock Wine implementation of DirectX…

GT620M is a Fermi card, and Nvidia supports Vulkan on Kepler and later (some GTX600 series, most GTX700 and up). So no, your card is not supported.

You might want to turn it off globally in Lutris to avoid disabling for each game:

  1. On left panel hover your :mouse: over Wine tab - :gear: Cog will appear, press it!
  2. Disable DXVK/VKD3D

@shockwave
What Nvidia card do you have?

If any game’s crash, refuse to start, blackscreen then just hit the terminal icon under the game in lutris and get the logs. You’ll normally be able to find what needs enabling/disabling in there

Thanks, I was wondering where I could find that. In this case, I was able to disable DXVK for that one game and it seems to work now. I just need to figure out why the controller keeps wanting to drift up.

Yeah but in your case that’s weird, unlike @Janinah , your GPU GeForce GTX 960M, should be fully working with vulkan / DXVK see here

That indicates that still something not set up right.

I have the msi gs72 6qe and it’s the same gpu, Vulkan seems to be working fine for me. The only issues I’ve had with games have been with screen resolution which is another reason I use lutris. Just cause 3 was trying to run in 4k and no way to change the resolution in game so I use lutris to change it before I run it

Here’s the message, I was right DXVK and Vulkan are mentioned…

Interesting it says ā€œfullyā€ā€¦Well anyway, if GPU is not in Vulkan db then it’s no-go :frowning:

P.S. Cool wallpaper, do you still have source??

I haven’t installed any other games in Lutris yet, been working on configuring my sims game(s) which is a lengthy process as, as you can see from below:

The Sims 3 & EPs require a lot of mods to try and keep the game playable - I have the aforementioned mods installed already as well as load of others by Nraas and custom content, as I’ve been playing the same neighborhood/save for like 5 years.

If it wasn’t for those mods I’d have left The Sims 3 years ago due to it becoming unplayable thanks to EA’s shoddy coding.

As mentioned above, the game itself is poorly coded making it unstable. However, Lutris is still able to launch it from the executable. What I might report, however is the fact that the launcher executable doesn’t work due to some dotnet 20 issue. Though the fix is on protondb, it hasn’t worked for me, so it would be good if lutris had a fix for it as the launcher is needed to install a certain type of custom content.

Thanks  swiped it from our ā€˜share your desktop’ thread. I’ll go hunt it down, it was posted by one of our main members who’s name escapes me  Still need to customise it some more though by adding better icons and a top panel.
