Pop! OS 24.04 LTS alpha (Cosmic DE) has been RELEASED

Pop! OS 24.04 LTS alpha is out, so I fired up a VM and installed it.
The install process was familiar and smooth.

With the exception of Neofetch and Htop, all stock. A bit laggy, but this is the first alpha. CPU usage is high, memory usage not all that bad…

Looks nice! Is it just me though or does Cosmic look like just themed GNOME?

I downloaded it and took a look. Looks promising. It will be interesting to see how it develops.

Definitely isn’t ready for regular usage yet though. Still too much missing/broken.

I would wait for the beta unless you just want to play around and experiment with it.

I like the configurability of the panels and dock. I like that transparency is supported out of the box.

It looks like it for sure from the perspective of the default panel. It doesn’t behave like it though.

I suppose. I still like it better than traditional Gnome. And Cosmic is written in Rust from the ground up, or so they say. Heading to work, but I’ll tinker a bit more when I get back.

Well, it is only Alpha 1. A long way from even Beta. I’m still goin to closely follow the development to see if the DE is something I’d use in EOS.

it’s got Applications etc upper left. It looks like Gnome. How is it different than Gnome in your opinion?
PS–thanks for the preview

Opinions are free. I’ve been using the DE for months now (on and off), and it works fine for my relatively light usage. Surprisingly games are working in Wayland (figured it was too alpha for that).

Applications is also in the bottom dock/panel. Other than about 25 minutes after installing this morning, I haven’t played with it. I’ll dig in more after work tonight and over the weekend. But on first boot, I didn’t think it “looked like” Gnome in as much as it was somewhat similar to Gnome. They obviously took ideas they liked, but implemented them in their own way. I always felt claustrophobic in Gnome. I did get that feeling this morning.

I understand the sentiment UncleSpellbinder, but I’m actually fairly comfortable in Cosmic and I spent some hours in it today, and didn’t break out in any cold sweats ;0

Everything in both the panel and dock is configurable. Either can be disabled.

The default layout is very similar to gnome though. Also, the look, in general is similar to gnome.

But in my short preview, it didn’t really feel like gnome.

that makes it much less gnome-proper. intriguing. thank you.

I never said I wasn’t comfortable in Cosmic. I did say that Gnome makes me feel claustrophobic. And while very similar to Gnome, Cosmic is not Gnome.

MUCH in Cosmic is configurable. An awful lot actually. Which is just one way that Cosmic differs greatly from Gnome.

I know there are folks here who don’t like The Linux Experiment, but give this video a watch. He shows a really good breakdown of Cosmic alpha, including it’s confugurability.

There’s no file search functionality, is there?

Yes. From both the file manager and the launcher.

From the launcher, you can do “find filename”

But that’s not configurable like tracker and Baloo, Is it?

I don’t think it is an indexer like baloo and tracker. That being said, I haven’t spent enough time with it to know how it works.

As for if it is configurable or not, it is hard to say since the settings application isn’t finished yet.
