Pc Freezing + plasmashell memoryleak

I’ve been using EndeavourOS for around a year now, but recently the following issues have occurred:

  1. If I use the standard kernel, it freezes on boot. Sometimes, it will unfreeze, but not every time
  2. If I use the LTS kernel, it doesn’t freeze, but plasmashell will slowly climb in memory usage, up to gigabytes in size. Once it reaches around 20 GB, the system crashes and becomes unresponsive. Audio will continue playing, but it becomes extremely choppy. On several occasions, I’ve observed plasmashell reach 35 GB of memory out of 64 GB total. Heaptrack didn’t seem to provide any useful information. I’ve ruled out hardware issues, as the system remains stable during stress tests. I’ve seen that some people have had similar issues on Nvidia specifically, which I also have, but I’m unsure if this is the root cause

Does anyone have any potential advise for diagnosing/fixing the issues?

Are you running any third party plasmoids? It could be that. If not try running plasmashell using valgrind to see if there is a memory leak in plasmashell.

no third party things and i am not using a slideshow wallpaper. i saw some people had issues with that when i was looking around. ill try valgrind and see.

i ran valgrind, it looks like i do have a memory leak. im not sure how to post the full log . but i can paste the summary if that is needed

It’s probably better to post a new bug at bugs.kde.org. I suppose you should be a good citizen and see if you can find an existing one first :smiley:

That is crazy. I’ve never seen plasma use much memory on my systems with 32 GB. It barely uses 3 GB.

yea its weird. two of my friends are having a similar issue but their plasmashell caps at around ten and will go back down. mine just keeps rising until a freeze happens.

It shouldn’t be anywhere near 10 either. Doesn’t make sense. You must have something installed or changes made or something. :person_shrugging:

Or it’s something to do with the hardware maybe?

That’s possible but when the OP say’s his friends have a similar problem?

Edit: This isn’t typical of Kde Plasma.

i tested hardware. shouldnt be that, at least not the ram or cpu. had an update last night to the nvidia drivers and now my screen keeps jittering and locking up , and the plasma issue is worse then ever. I cant think of anything i installed that would have messed things up so bad. so Im gonna go ahead today and reinstall the Os, and just be extra careful. beyond that im getting a new gpu so if this was caused by nvidia, it wont be soon.

heres the log. i just did a fresh install of the os aswell. plasma is slightly climbing , im not sure where its supposed to sit but it hasn’t climbed past 5 gigs so far so thats somthing i think.

Have you tried EOS with another DE to see if you will still have the same issue?

Do you have the possibility to try EOS with KDE on another hardware?

Do you have the possibility to try other distros which delivers the latest KDE on the same hardware?

i havent tried another desktop enviroment yet. the reason im using eos is because a friend of mine also uses it. if i need help with somthing they usually can figure it out. so switching would be abit of a pain. The os was also working perfectly fine until just this past month. ive got a super old laptop running eos and that one runs just fine. seems to just be this pc having an issue. reinstalling it seems to have fixed the issue mostly . it still gets to around 5 or 6 gigs but it goes down again.

Coincidentally I’m also using an Ampere based Nvidia GPU. Let’s tug this thread, is your friend also using an Ampere based GPU?

Perhaps others here with an Ampere based Nvidia GPU running Plasma + Wayland, could confirm behaviour on their systems?
