Other open applications are slowed down even after switching focus/Alt+Tabbing to them while running a game, tempfixed by entering fullscreen momentarily

Hi, first timer here! I ran into a strange issue after updating packages via pacman that needed updating. For context, I’m using the Cinnamon DE w/ X11 as the display server, using an AMD GPU (RX 6800XT, amdgpu driver).

When I opened a game while Firefox or Steam or what have you were also open, the performance of these applications would be slower than usual (UI animations are slower, scrolling is not smooth), while whatever game I’m running would be fine. This is temporarily fixed by entering in fullscreen mode in e.g. Firefox, only to then send me back to square one after alt+tabbing back to the game.

Previously, the issue was even worse: the game that I would be running would suddenly have its FPS drop to around 27-30 FPS after half an hour or so of playing, only to be temporarily fixed by Alt+Tabbing between windows several times, which would later come up again and require me to mash Alt+Tab again. This was then partially fixed by re-installing the kernel, as suggested here (thanks, kind stranger!):

pacman -Syu linux

To me, the only thing I could surmise is it could have something to do with the compositor. I tried enabling/disabling the option Disable compositing for full-screen windows within System Settings → General, but that doesn’t make a difference at all.

None of what’s described here ever happened until I updated packages recently, I don’t exactly recall which ones though. Any ideas?

This might seem crazy and overkill but.. I bought a new 144hz monitor altogether and started using DisplayPort instead of HDMI and the issue disappeared.. I was previously using a 60hz 1080p monitor with an old HDMI cable.. Again, this never happened before updating packages so it beats me what could’ve caused it :man_shrugging: ..

I guess if anyone is lurking and experiencing the same or similar issues, maybe try to reinstall your video drivers and kernel and hope for the best?
