Optimus Manager issues

No go. Stuck on a black screen with flat curser. But I can get to tty. Yay!

Yeah, you messed up. You updated your kernel, didn’t reboot and then installed drivers…

Okay, now when you get to a TTY, run

sudo pacman -Syu
reboot

Hopefully, you won’t get a black screen. Then you can worry about optimus-switch and all that other stuff.

If you get a black screen again, then try:

sudo pacman -R nvidia-dkms
sudo nvidia-installer-dkms

and reboot again.

I got there is nothing to do. So I assume just go to the next step without needing to reboot?

Yes. Try removing the drivers and running the installer again, then reboot.

@shockwave before you uninstalled optimus-manager did you run the optimus-manager --cleanup command?

i’ll mention a couple things before i go,

  • check output of dkms status, if the nvidia drivers show for your current kernel then they are installed.

  • make sure there is not another display/monitor/gpu related conf file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ that could be conflicting with optimus-switch .conf files which are named 99-nvidia.conf or 99-intel.conf depending on which mode your in.

  • if that all looks good then do a file search for optimus manager, if you didnt run the cleanup script before uninstalling it then you probably have some of its files/configurations floating around in places like /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ and whatever else optimus-manager messes with.

if you cant get to a desktop at all, try switching to intel mode from TTY and reboot so you can have a desktop while figuring out whats going on

I reinstalled the Nvidia driver.

Dkms status shows

Acpi_call, 1.1.0, 5.8.5-arch1-1, x86_64: installed
Nvidia, 450.66, 5.8.5-arch1-1, x86_64: installed

I used nano to look at the location you recommended I check. There was nothing there. It just said ā€œā€¦ Is a directoryā€

I tired switching back to Intel, but still get a black screen with a cursor. I can still get to tty.

You can’t use nano to look in a directory. The command for that is ls. So:

ls /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

nano is an editor, not a file manager

Okay. There are two video files there.

20-nvidia.conf and. 99-intel.conf

sudo rm 20-nvidia.conf
sudo set-nvidia.sh
systemctl reboot

and see if you get to a desktop now

That did it. I am back on the desktop. Thank you!

Are there other places where I should look for hidden config files for optimus-manager

your guess is as good as mine, i never had anything but problems with optimus-manager. if it’s working you should be good

BTW, should I be concerned about any of this other stuff?

@ThisPoorGuy Glad you like it and got it working.

@shockwave Happy to see that you are up and running. It was 2am where I was and I had to go to sleep. As far as your second question goes, if you are worried, make a new thread about them. Let’s keep this thread about one issue, Optimus Manager issues. This will prevent any confusion in the future if another user reads it to try and solve a similar issue.

Thank you. It seems to be working good. Thank you very much for your help. The good thing when things don’t go as planned is you learn a lot.
