When do packages normally get automatically removed?
You should handle your orphans and/or foreign packages.
If you need some sort of pacman hook to ensure you do that then use one.
You mean you have foreign packages that then need manual compilation.
Again it is your responsibility to handle your packages - especially deprecated and/or foreign ones.
If they are orphans and you dont need/want them then remove them.
PS.
I have a thing that will, among other things, prompt orphan removal.
