Nvidia drivers not working

it would be also interesting to see if you can stop start lightdm manually after booting to black screen.
sudo systemctl stop lightdm
sudo systemctl start lightdm

just did it following your advice. problem persists.

thanks!

Are you suggesting I should follow some of the instructions specified in the link?
I am not using Optimus, I installed it before and it messed my system, no tray icons and brightness control not working, so I thought first I would try to have nvidia GPU working before adding additional challenges.

thanks. sudo systemctl stop lightdm produces no visible effect.
sudo systemctl start lightdm leads to the following:

I also here post tty1 screen when booting, up to the point that it gives the black screen:

so it looks like it is not lightdm failing.
What if you would blacklist intel driver?
by adding modprobe.blacklist=i915 @ kernel line from grub?

It would be interesting to see what drivers you have installed.

As you cannot boot into system, you can check them at the USB installer by running arch-chroot.
Something like:

sudo su
mount /dev/sda1 /mnt # instead, use your root partition device
arch-chroot /mnt

Then give commands:

pacman -Qs xf86-video
pacman -Qs nvidia
pacman -Qs linux headers

I already blacklisted intel driver by writing this file:

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

install i915 /usr/bin/false
install intel_agp /usr/bin/false
blacklist nouveau
blacklist nvidiafb
blacklist rivafb

is that enough?

In fact, I am able to boot into system (I simply alternate between commenting and not commenting the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf. I even made an alias to edit the file quickly. lol.

It might help if you try blacklisting with the kernel options instead of /etc/modprobe.d.
That way it should blacklist a driver earlier.
Worth a try anyway.

ok. tried it. problem persists. (I edited grub options and added the parameter modprobe.blacklist=i915)
thanks anyway

Maybe try acpi_osi=“Windows 2013” in the grub command line

thanks! will try that. In the meanwhile (don’t know if it has anything to do, but…) I noticed while rebuilding kernel image with mkinitcpio -P, that I get some warnings:

Possibly missing firmware for module wd719x
Possibly missing firmware for module aic94xx
Possibly missing firmware for module xhci_pci

Also, here is my latest Xorg Log with all tweaks up until now

ok. Tried this parameter by editing grub parameters at boot, just after nvidia modesetting.
Problem persists.
Here is the Xorg Log having booted with that parameter:

Almost need these files compared side by side. It’s hard looking at them this way.

What i do see in the last one is this.

5.105] (II) NVIDIA: The X server supports PRIME Render Offload.
[ 5.193] (II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA GPU Quadro K620M (GM108GL-A) at PCI:8:0:0 (GPU-0)

Edit: It’s also in the first log.

What is in this file? Folder?

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d

Edit: Also look at this one

/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"

@kamazeuci

I don’t have a laptop with hybrid graphics but here are the files on my system with GTX 1060 so you can compare.

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf

http://ix.io/2Tsp

/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf

http://ix.io/2Tsq

Maybe it’s no help but you look anyway.

I also just had the problem of updating to the new driver but I’m beginning to think it was a mirror problem being out of sync.

thanks @ricklinux.
I tried using your files but the same problem persisted. black screen with white horizontal line on top left corner.
here is my Xorg Log for that session:

I also tried a new thing from terminal, in the same session, running:
sudo lightdm

Failed to use bus name org.freedesktop.DisplayManager, do you have appropriate permissions?

Is this ok or might I be finding clues for solving the problem?

I am confused after trying all these things and nothing working… Do you think it is probable I am missing something? or this is a common problem and could be a bug?
thanks
