Well, everything is all good here now. 
I was trying to figure out what has changed in the last month or so for me, then I remembered that many of my files, particularly media files, have been getting renamed by a script. I’m guessing the script is what actually solved the errors. 
The script: Bash Script: Auto-Rename Long Filenames
It has a few parameters for filenames, so one of them, or a combination, is probably what has solved the issue for me.
