I have been running a fresh installation after getting a black screen after an update. The new install has been running fine, even after a few updates. Tonight I did the update from the welcome screen, black screen again.

Boot starts then after selecting the image, I get black screen, no login and no terminal available.

I have been using EOS for a few years now, I do not want to change to another OS after testing so many. I have been happy with EOS until now. 2 black screen issues in one month after updates. I just got going again.

KDE Plasma desktop

I have installed the LTS version: 6.1.67-1-lts

Current OS installed from the below mentioned live ISO.
I am now running of a live ISO, details below:

> calamares 22.12.3.6-4
> firefox 116.0.1-1
> linux 6.4.8.arch1-1
> mesa 1:23.1.5-1
> xorg-server 21.1.8-2 (xorg)
> nvidia-dkms 535.86.05-2

Where do I start to get this fixed?

What commands can I run to give feedback for support?

It is no 01:00 am in SA. Will look for feedback in the morning.

Much appreciated.

First I notice that the kernel is out of date so you need to update the kernel
since its nvidia you may need to change to nvidia driver instead of nouveau

in arch-chroot did you mount the root system before running update?

Did you try viewing the log files before running an update or did you just try to update?

Gets to a screen asking image to boot into. it waits a few seconds and selects default which is the LTS version. Then screen goes black, nothing else.

I now have 2 x extra image entries on boot screen, the 6.6.7 version. Not one of these work, just black screen after.

I also remembered something else. The reason I installed the LTS version was because the standard install from ISO would boot to a black screen.

The last update did not upgrade the LTS version.

OK, i suspect the linux kernel is causing the issue. The last version that worked was 6.1.62-1-lts.

Is it possible to downgrade the kernel, and how do i do this?

I had this problem on 2 machines in the middle of the day for the 6.6.7 update.
(2 x I3 10100f machine with amd 2100 pro gpus)

I went with the “chroot” procedure and it didn’t “unblock” them.

I was able to repair both of them because of this contribution from a knowledgeable forum member:

> [@UEFI boot loader does not show up in firmware menu, System dont boot anymore](https://forum.endeavouros.com/t/uefi-boot-loader-does-not-show-up-in-firmware-menu-system-dont-boot-anymore/48814/39):

It might be a possibility for your computer. No cost to go and check if you have that option present and disabled 😉
Pesky bios with “CSM” are now hunted on the machines.

Best Regards 🙂

I don’t want to annoy you but are you really sure about that? I have a almost 10yo computer next to me that already supports that feature. The Feature also can be called different like “Bios Boot Mode” and then you can choose between Uefi or Legacy.

Downgrading to 6.1.62 kernel did not work.

I have a second SSD with the same OS as my work laptop. Updated the EOS with yay which installed the linux kernel and boot is now broken as well.

I created a new live ISO and this would not boot past selecting the image.

For shits and giggles I reset the BIOS which sets the boot to legacy. Now when i boot, i select to boot from USB UEFI, and the live ISO boots.

Not sure what is happening. Could this be bios/hardware related issue. If this is hardware related issue, i do not want to use EOS anymore

Just did a fresh install from live ISO. All working now, BUT with latest LTS only. Running standard kernel stops with black screen after image select.

This is the 3rd time this year that I have to do fresh install of EOS after 2 years running no issues. I am afraid to update now.

I also am using a Dell Latitude laptop (E5450) and have had the same experience when updating the kernel which eventually leads to a black screen after kernel selection on boot. I updated my laptop this evening and once again was presented with the same black screen. I found this thread and poked around in the BIOS after reading about disabling CSM above.

I was able to fix the black screen issue by going into Advanced Boot Options in BIOS and unchecking Enable Legacy Option Roms. I have included a screenshot, though your BIOS menu looks a little different than mine. Hoping this helps!
