New WiFi card for my PC, help

I hope I can post this here. Today got PC with everything set together, but didn’t notice it doesn’t have WiFi feature on MB. So I need that, I would appreaciate some guidance from community if possible.

I checked wikipedia about WiFi 6 but honestly its like chinese for me…

On my local internet-shops I dont see any PCIE wifi cards with standard IEEE 802.11ax.
For example, this wifi card cost ~55 EUR and it just says:

  • Speed 2.5 Gbps

Is that WiFi 6? :thinking:

How much cost WiFi 6 cards on average?
Will there be huge difference between, let’s say, some random 15 EUR wifi card VS 60 EUR?

Also, if my torrents max download speed is ~1.5MiB right now, do I even benefit from this WiFi 6?

Hope someone can clear this stuff somewhat so I dont need buy blindly.

Not likely, looks like your bottleneck is internet connection, what’s your current wi-fi card?

But I wont need wifi card on laptop I need it on my newly bought PC which has no wifi.

What speed should I have to benefit from WiFi 6? I could potentially upgrade my ISP soon too, maybe not sure.

Well, for example i have DELL workstation with Intel WiFi Link 9260 | 2x2 802.11ac (should be Wi-Fi 5 i think by those normie friendly classsifications? :man_shrugging:), so it’s max real output speed in 5 GHz mode is about 866 MiB/s.

For my 500 MBit/s connection it’s more than enough.

So given that estimation, It only makes sense to use Wi-Fi 6 with higher speed only in case you have 1000+ MBit/s internet connection, in my view. Or in case you want to buy it looking forward in future (i wouldn’t really, look at :clown_face: :earth_africa: around :rofl:)

And theory is pretty simple:

  • Higher GHz mode = higher speed
  • Higher GHz mode = weaker connection strength, compared to lower modes (if you have your router in around 5m range it doesn’t matter that much)

You should look for ax, 5+ GHz markers and higher speeds, something like that for example:

Not sure about difference between price / quality though, since i have no direct experience with pci-e cards.

You would be best to get a proper internal WiFi Pci-E card and have it installed in the computer. You could use a usb WiFi adapter also if you can find a decent one at the right price. You don’t need WiFi 6 which is the latest 802.11 AX standard but you should get one that is at least 802.11 AC. They are backward compatible so they will just use the standard that your WiFi router has. Your current speed you gave is not very fast at all. So you need to look at what your WiFi router is and also what your ISP is providing. You may need to upgrade the WiFi router. Or maybe it’s just the equipment you have connected to it currently?

The link you posted above is for an Ethernet card. That’s not what you need. Your motherboard already has Ethernet on it. It just doesn’t have built in WiFi so you need a Pci-e WiFi card installed because your board is that new. Or you could use a USB WiFi adapter. Your choice. You can get WiFi cards that are 802.11 N or 802.11 AC or 802.11 AX standard. I personally would get nothing less than the 802.11 AC as it is dual band 2.4 Ghz and 5.0 Ghz

Wifi 6 is definitely not necessary and doesn’t even matter if your router does not support it. At your current speed, even 802.11N (WiFi 4) would be more than enough for your needs, capping out at ~37.5MB/s. If you want Wifi 6 anyway, get a PCI card with an intel ax210 or ax200 chip in it. (Intel wifi cards have historically worked the best for me on linux). If you don’t need it, most of the world uses Wifi 4 and 5 these days. Good wifi 5 intel cards are the AC7265 (BT 4.2) and the AC 9260 (BT 5.1).

You seem in big favor for Pci-E > USB. Can you briefly explain why?
As far as I can tell most Pci-E WiFi cards come with antennas like this:

which I would find quite unconvenient.

So right now it seems USB is the way to go especially since I have like 8 USB ports. Am I missing something?

In my experience, PCIe is more reliable and faster. The reason for the huge antennae is for range. Most laptops embed these into the screen. Nearly all pci cards include BT as well.

That would work however. To get the torrent download speed, check with your router and ISP as your wifi connection speed is based on those two factors. According to the website, max throughput is 867Mbps which should get you torrent speeds ~100MB/s

This is what i get on WiFi that is 802.11 AC standard My uploads are quite fast because i am on FibreOptic.

My downloads on Ethernet are substantially higher as i have Gigabit Ethernet and my ISP can provide up to 1.5 Gigabit
