2560 x 1440 @ 60 htz isnt what i paid for. also don’t know how to enable freesync

ok i got free sync and 144htz now to try and play

Neither the display port cable that comes with it or the one i bought is giving me 144hz

but i have to choose between 1 ms response time or free sync? which would you choose?

I would choose freesync. It should give you a better experience in most cases.

i see nothing about freesync there

DISPLAY=:0 xrandr --output DisplayPort-2 --set "freesync" 1
X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)
Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 11 (RRQueryOutputProperty)
Serial number of failed request: 45
Current serial number in output stream: 45

well i dont know what to do about that. my ps3 controllers arent setup in windows for me to play to see what freesycn even does in a game. linux shows no info about whether it works or not.

2k gaming is leaps and bounds above 1080p. well maybe just one leap unbounded. looks good.

You have it working now then. Well it has twice the pixels of 1080p so it should look pretty good.

It does. I have a sound bar hooked up to it but when I game with my controller and sound bar over Bluetooth I lose my controller constantly. So I have the audio cable plugged into the back of the monitor in the headphone jack as there is no digital audio on my pc or the monitor but my old sling tv Android box that does 4K60? Got it for free does 2k60 also. Anyway not my ideal but it works.

Why don’t they just make TVs with display port and 144 hz refresh rate. Would save me so much trouble.

I’ve only seen TVs with 120 and 240 refresh rates - although I suppose there must be some with 60! Unfortunately I don’t game much any more - so I can’t help with settings there.

so to turn on freesync , do i have to unplug second monitor ?

Yes (assuming you're using X11).

Freesync cannot work with more than one monitor turned on in X11, nor can it in Wayland unless you're using Sway window manager.

Be aware that there will never be a fix for this in X11 (it's basically impossible, actually). However, it is possible in Wayland, and other Wayland implementations (like GNOME) are working on it. But for now, it's only available in Sway.

You also have to actually enable Freesync in your Xorg config file (and reboot). https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Variable_refresh_rate#Enable_on_AMDGPU

120Hz TVs have become more widely available over the past few years.

As for displayport, I don’t think it will ever be widely adopted in the home entertainment space. Changing connectors is painful for consumers because it requires new cables and new devices. It is painful for manufactures because they need to add additional ports which have costs. Additionally, HDMI supports things that DP doesn’t like eARC and CEC.

That being said, I wish TVs had moved to displayport years ago because it is generally better technology-wise and connector-wise.

Those numbers you are seeing advertised with TVs are more likely to be marketing magic than the actual refresh rates. In North America, the vast majority of TVs have panels with 60Hz refresh rates.

I guess the implied tongue-in-cheek emoji didn’t come through… funny how that works. I have enjoyed 120 or better since the early 2000s - or whenever it was I first got a flat screen - because: ice hockey! Back then I had to go Sony to get it - but luckily that original screen has continued working well for 15 years or so - even if demoted to the bedroom…

Well something more than 60hz is needed over hdmi. I love the picture quality of my 2k monitor and the faster refresh rate is lovely but there are things i miss. like a remote contol. i hate having to lean forward to change the input to switch between my sling android tv box (which is 4k60 but runs at 2k60 also) and my computer. i have multiple cables connected to a sound bar and have to switch inputs. it’s an annoyance. But the biggest problem i have is i cant mount it to the wall until i buy a vesa mounting plate to screw in the back of it. And it’s smaller than the 1080p (43inch sceptre) tv and costs as much as 2 sceptre 50 inch 4k tv’s when not on sale. I’m frugal and this was a big splurge for a 32 inch device. Still happy i did it though. Eso looks real good at 2560 x 1440 even if i only get to end 40 some fps. OH i forgot to mention that my bluetooth controllers keep disconnecting when the sound bar is connected via bluetooth also. not fun for any gaming.
