I thought I’ll say hi, as I missed old-time forums that aren’t Major Social Network.
I’m your regular distro hopper since 2007 or so, maybe earlier, and after few years on Windows, after their latest push for AI in everything (Notepad? Seriously?) I decided to go back to something familiar and slightly less bloated. Initially I chose OpenSUSE, as I wanted something slightly less mainstream, but still working, but after a few months some minor issues started to annoy me. I stumbled upon E.OS and I thought eh, why not.
And I’m absolutely shocked how good it is! “Everything works” is an understatement, some things on my laptop didn’t work even on Windows. It’s snappy, responsive, and what’s most important for me - I don’t know how, but it’s the first system that doesn’t turn my laptop into a frying pan. I won’t even mention the MS, it was literal hell, but OpenSUSE wasn’t much better - I got up to 80 degrees C idle. On Endeavour, I had to check after some time if my fan actually works. And the size of the fully installed system? I had to triple check if everything actually works because in KDE’s Dolphin the disk memory bar is almost invisible.
I’m yet to wait a few months for my first “whoopsie” on update, but at this point I’m absolutely amazed how good this system is.
But not gonna lie, first thing I did was to change the violet theme into something different.
Huge thank you to all the devs, hello community, and I hope my adventures with previous distros will be useful at least a bit here so that I can at least help with something.
If that helps in any way, I use violet/purple-ish themes almost everywhere else, but I like my system to be overall invisible to me. I get that I’m heretic now either way so I should probably change my signature to “non-violet communication”.
Hey! Welcome to EOS! Yeah, it’s shockingly good now, to the point of being as stable as you want it to be. Can you absolutely brick your system if you do something wrong? Absolutely. But for the most part, you know the score, understand your rollback or rebuild plan, and enjoy the journey!
