New grub updates

Yes, Hirens (or your own PE or other OSs) will also work.

I similarly keep a utility ventoy USB around that periodically has some of the ISOs refreshed… which is honestly the most hassle it incurs - just however long it takes to download new ones and/or convince myself to do it.

welcome @cscs to our neck of the woods.

And thanks for your clarification on HirenBootCD.

You said your own PE. Can you please elaborate a bit on this?

Thanks.

Its an edition of windoze that one can create.

The legal ‘free win ISO’ type things you may find like Hirens will be some sort of spin of WinPE.
Technically the only way to be 100% sure your windoze ISO is genuine and not tampered with is to create it yourself so you will find the msoft documentation and the like will reflect this and likewise similar documents will encourage you to create your own PE and not rely on a third party ISO.

Though they dont exactly make it super easy. Its a bit of a pain.

And some of the ‘third party’ offerings are relatively vetted.

Can you please provide a list? I was under the impression that HirenBootCD was the ultimate if not the penultimate Windows system rescue disk. I had planned to use HirenBootCD and install a few software like Kaspersky/Sophos/MalwareBytes and other online virus scanners on it.

I am hesitant to do this but .. these come to mind.

(( :warning: I Do Not Endorse Any of These :warning: ))

Of course Hirens might be considered the standard .. but it is a bit different than the past. It was discontinued back in 2012 and the project was picked up by ‘community effort’, or so the website claims.

I was hesitant to offer alternatives too, as reviews suggest the presence of malware.

I used Ultimate Boot CD and it’s dodgy big brother Hiren’s back in their day. But these days I don’t find much of a need for it. A Linux live ISO such as EndeavourOS’ provides a lot of what I might have used, including memory testers.

Anyway, has this topic strayed? I might have missed the connection between Hiren’s and the grub update
