New display resolution

hello fellow users
ill keep it brief, i bought a new monitor with 3440x1440 resolution
i cant seem to make it past 1920 despite having another display with 2560x1440 work flawlessly
i tried to see if xandr might show something different ill put the output below

weirdly enough the display (samsung) complains that its set to 1920 and not its resolution of 3440, DP-1 should be the mentioned display

sorry if this explanation sounds confusing, ill elaborate on anything desired and thank you in advance

is your GPU capable to handle the resolution?

thank you for the quick reply, i was fairly certain it was and it turns out, it is
i tried a different hdmi cable and it works now

tho i am curious, does hdmi cables change technology wise enough that a cable only a few years old is incapable of putting that resolution out?
the cable wasnt faulty since it works with other monitors

HDMI standards are constantly evolving.
So it is possible that your older HDMI cable is not made for the same standard level as your new monitor.

That means one has to be somewhat careful when buying HDMI cables. Similar issues exist with other cables, e.g. the ethernet cables.

For example, some time ago I got a faster ethernet connection, and my old ethernet cables didn’t allow higher speeds, so I had to get better cables. Now the speed is as expected.

interesting, one never stops learning do they

ill keep the new cable knowledge in mind, especially for ethernet, thank you very much
