From the Welcome page I clicked on the Update Mirrors for Arch. It presented me with a list of countries, from which I selected 5, then clicked on OK.
When I check out /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
file, the geographically closest country is not listed.

The closest mirror is often not the fastest. Geographic location doesn’t always make that much difference.
It depends where you live and how well connected you are.

That’s funny. Let me quote from this Discovery page:
Usually (but not always) the closest mirrors are the fastest. That’s why we usually want to use mirrors from the user’s current location (country) or some nearby countries.

Yeah, I think that is a overstated. The closest mirrors are “sometimes” the fastest but “usually” seems overstated.
For example, there are some mirrors in Germany that are very fast. Big portions of western Europe will get a German mirror as their fastest mirror.
I am on a different continent and I have German mirrors in my top 10.
