I don’t necessarily disagree with you, but I also don’t know if that’s what is happening. I don’t have exactly all of the answers as to why I believe Microsoft isn’t entirely pursuing what you purposed, but my gut feeling is telling me that they aren’t exactly doing that since I can imagine there are some roadblocks on the way that I don’t know if Microsoft is entirely willing to do considering the nature of the beast that is the Linux “ecosystem”.
WSL, winget, PowerToys, PowerShell and its cross-platform nature, the implementation of sudo within Windows 11, all of these are here to please developers and make them stay on Windows, less about making general consumers pleased to make them stay.
I will give your plan some more thought, but not sure, not sure.
I mean… I feel like what Windows needs is less a re-write and more of an absolute overall of priorities. I have a feeling Windows doesn’t make as much money as something like their cloud services. That’s why they push for Office 365 and their apps so heavily within Windows and why some features within it seem more designed to push ads than help the user.
In about 1987 (nearly 40 years ago), a very special technician (a genius) and I installed Xenix, namely Microsoft’s “Linux” (it was Unix), on a Perkin Elmer 3230. Remember that. Micro$oft – (sort-of Linux) – circa 1987, 40 years ago.
I am so glad they went their own way and let intelligent people develop Linux and all the flavours thereof. Just imagine how much money we’ve all saved!
But after ripping off CP/M, which looked just like DOS before DOS, DR-DOS (by the guys that developed CP/M) and MS-DOS came out, Micro$oft produced “WNT”, which was after Digital Equipment Company (DEC) went bust with their really nice VMS and Open-VMS operating systems. Funnily enough, “V”+1 = “W”, “M”+1 = “N”, “S”+1 = “T” and “VMS” became “WNT” (just like “HAL” and “IBM”). At first I loved WNT because it was just like VMS, which I also loved. (Soon after which I switched to Linux.)
And M$ has been using Linux for many years, not just in Azure.
It’s not their fault that they do not have any ideas of their own. And plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery after all.
