I have a philosophical question…about efficiency/usability/and because I can.
Ok, I run KDE, so I have access to wallpaper plugins built in that will fetch daily popular wall papers (like Flickr, NOAA, etc). I also like transparency, so my windows use that feature. I ponder about not using the ‘feature’ and so…I thought I’d ask
So, why do I have the photo of the day perpetually enabled, even when it causes efficiency/usability issues with being able to see my windows? I’m curious how many find a ‘perfect’ wallpaper and stick with it?
Maybe even…if a feature is there..must we use it ? lol
On the humor side, when watching a video I’ve frequently wondered why there are sailing ships in the sky of the video I’m watching..only to realize that the wallpaper changed at midnight.
I view my computers as tools to accomplish certain tasks, and I don’t want anything distracting on my desktop. For many years I have used a simple solid black wallpaper. It’s perfect for me.
I haven’t changed my wallpaper in several years. I’ve tried other ones but nothing beats the one I’m currently using. I do have others in my wallpaper folder and maybe a few that could also look good but I don’t care for changing my wallpaper every week or every month or else I would just be distracted to much by trying to find the perfect wallpaper.
As a Libra I get bored easy. I change my wallpaper once a week generally when I do my normal maintenance. The usage of my Computer has changed over the years. I now am just doing media type stuff so I don’t need to bury my face in things like I used to have to in the past.
Hmm, I look fwd to (hopefully) more opinions. It’s interesting to see what others think and do, and a datum point in perhaps forcing me to re-think my absurd behavior ;0
I have 454 different wallpapers on my computer stored in a folder called ‘Wallpaper’ in my home directory. In KDE plasma I run them in slideshow mode which selects the wallpaper randomly at will and the time interval between each wall paper is set to 7 seconds before it changes the wallpaper to a new one. . This change is continually going on in the background no matter which virtual desktop I’m in (I’ve got 3) on my desktop panel. The effect is nice and the scenery always changes as my mood. . .
Try it . . . you’ll like it. (With multicore processors it doesn’t hurt to use up one of them for this task.)
I used to have a Wallpaper folder with 500+ images switching about every 10-20 minutes, but it’s been a nightmare to keep a consistent theme with the ever changing Highlight colors. So now i have a few (still 40+) preconfigured themes with a few wallpapers each, and i generally choose one when turning my computer on in the morning and i stick with it for the day.
Choosing wallpapers is easy in my case: my dad and i went for long walks into the mountains together for years, until he was 79; we both loved being in the mountains and just silently trot along the paths and tracks, walking all day, seeing the landscape, the ever changing scenery, the animals - and enjoying the fact that we were the only ones being there.
I have a folder with a large stash of photo’s of him walking, sitting on a rock, eating or drinking something in that beautiful scenery - these I use as my wallpaper, changing every half hour.
That’s really nice man. I’ve always wanted one of those digital picture frames but I’d have to fill them with stock photos and the water marks would annoy me
I so rarely see my wallpaper that I don’t pay much attention to it anymore.
I used to set them to things enjoy but an update a few years ago an update had a side effect of replacing the wallpaper with the KDE wallpaper and I have just left it that way. Now I get a new wallpaper when new KDE versions come out.
It took me a while to find a wallpaper that was nice to look at, meshed with my theme choice(s), and worked well with semi-transparent terminals. Haven’t changed it since.
outer space and water (lakes, rivers, oceans) are nice for me but if I gotta get things seriously accomplished (as opposed to my goofing off) I concur with @Stagger_Lee – I have a folder of solids for no distraction. I usually default to grey.

EDIT–try life with no slideshow sometime. All that noise and movement in the background is distracting to me
No way I’d have a slideshow. My desktop wallpapers are rarely changed as I don’t get to see them much … and as for transparency on Terminal windows:
