Hello to the community. I’m considering installing EndeavourOS KDE on my test laptop in the next few days. Currently, I’m (still?) using Manjaro KDE, but lately it hasn’t been quite satisfying. I currently have Btrfs installed on Manjaro because it’s the default. Would you recommend Btrfs for EndeavourOS as well? I only need a snapshot function; the other features Btrfs offers are unimportant to me. How long will ext4 be supported as the default on EndeavourOS? Does it still make sense to rely on the old ext4 at this point? Greetings from Germany, Dagrod
We don’t have a firm recommendation. Please feel free to choose whichever filesystem you prefer. In the automated partitioning options we offer both ext4 and btrfs.
We have no plans to stop supporting ext4.
Every filesystem has pros and cons. It is more about you prefer and what makes the most sense for your particular use case.
I did manage to familiarize myself with Btrfs to some extent last year, but I understand ext4 much better. I’ll continue to consider which one to choose. Thanks for your reply @dalto .

If that’s a function you need, then Btrfs is a good choice for you.
Btrfs isn’t a replacement for ext4, it is simply another option, in much the same way a pickup / ute / truck isn’t a replacement for a family car, it is simply an option better suited to some people. Which one you use depends on your needs above anything else.

Whether EndeavourOS or any other distro, I don’t think ext4 is going anywhere anytime soon. And as @dalto said: “It is more about what you prefer and what makes the most sense for your particular use case.” I’m more old-school. I use ext4 because it just works. If I want a backup or snapshot, I’ll use Timeshift. Between an external drive and Megasync, all my important files get backed up already.
Thanks @UncleSpellbinder for the kind welcome. I’ve been using Borg for data backups for years, so snapshots aren’t really intended for that. I think I’ll go back to Btrfs after all, but that might change tomorrow.
From tests I have seen ext4 is faster then Btrfs in most cases(especially gaming related) and more file safe.
I’ve noticed the same thing with Manjaro in recent months, even though I’ve already used noatime in the fstab.

btrfs appears to be fantastic, if you’re a Linux crack with lots of time for administration of your system, for anyone else ext4 is more than enough.

After installing EOS KDE on my test laptop yesterday, I installed it on my main machine today. Both installations use Btrfs and Snapper. It feels significantly smoother and more responsive than Manjaro. I think I’ll stick with it. Thanks to the developers and thanks to everyone who gave me such a warm welcome here in the forum.
