Linux kernel 5.8 is officially released

I ran these on a poor Intel dual-core laptop, obviously hooked up to the mains…

Well 10 seconds might sound like a lot, but it isn’t if you look at the total time, about 1%

When Arch switches to 5.8, I’ll redo these, then we can see the influence of the patches (I think it’s minimal).

anticipating 5.8.1 soon…

I wonder what effect it will have on the stability of the system.

You mean the transition from 5.7 to 5.8?

Yes, that’s what I mean.

I think very new hardware will profit the most.
So far I see no differences in terms of stability, but it’s only been a few days (Zen2+Navi).

I do not think there are many problems, although these can occur in connections, grub, heating, speed, slowness, etc. etc.
Also obviously patches that run a lot of hardware.

As always, kernelnewbies have a changelog:

We’ll see. The new kernel will be downloaded today through the updates. The test of pudding is eating.

Just tell me if you like the modell

Another chance to test my odd “laptop won’t go to sleep if connected to power” issue which came with a kernel upgrade earlier this year and hopefully goes away with another one.
Another issue which crept in recently and which I haven’t managed to resolve is a “nVidia GPU falling off the bus” which requires a reboot before I can use the GPU.

5.8 is in testing repos.
But it seems to break virtualbox host, at least here…

Luckily Arch always releases the point one releases in the stable repo, so by that time, I think it will be solved.

Does anyone here know if 5.8 will make connecting and using printers as easy as it is with Windows? Or is that being unrealistic?

Lawrence

That’s not really a kernel thing, more of a CUPS thing.

Thanks.
