Librewolf is infected clean with McAfee?

Wow, thanks guys!

I thought as much. It reminded me of those seedy ways Macafee and Norton used to scare people in the late 90s with such scare tactics. What creeps. To think they still do that. Yuck.

Man, that’s scary. I’m thinking about beginners and older folks.

I think it has something to do with things like Web Protection Alert or something similar. I think you might had subscribed McAfee in the past, in which you had enabled this service, which may be the reason for those pop-up.

Not for the past twenty years and not with that email address. I think thi is creepier than that. Oh well, one less pigeon out there

99.99% sure its this

EndeavourOS doesn’t come with McAfee or Librewolf out of the box.

Seeing “librewolf” in notification, instead of something more mainstream like “MS Office” or “Google Chrome” makes me suspect the person who made this notification service was specifically targeting Linux users

could be also reading browser identification?

Agreed, it could be a Mozilla issue that redirects an ad but it feels like hacking and spamming at this stage.

I thought the point of using Librewolf is that it randomly presents itself as different browser. I’ll have top check that again.

Fun fact is that I also use LibreWolf browser, and with that ID which was signed in with Norton Services; and I had not even received even single notification regarding it.

Ya. If my computer told me I had a virus and to use McAfee to scan it -it’s drunk and I’d prop it up in the corner of the spare room for a few hours to sober up.

Sounds like a pop up I get when I visit pornhu…err baseball news. Yes. Lots of baseball. Updates. At night.

You know, it’s funny. I don’t visit “those” sites, at least, on this computer  I have another dummy tablet when I go to risky sites. But I don’t… of course. :innocent:

What pisses me off with these cavemen tactics is that I had to get rid of my user profile, reinstall plugins, and after today’s reboot, lost all my tabs. I think I set up sync though. I’ll see on my other device is I still have those tabs somewhere. It’s a lot of work wasted and lost productivity. We need more adults in the room at the board of these companies.

Hi 33Nicolas, I would treat it as spam, I get notifications from so called Mcafee, to say if I don’t renew my subscription, my pc will not function, weirdest thing is I’ve never subscribed to Mcafee in my life and don’t intend to,…guess what my pc is absolutely Fine.

I think we need to learn how to make our own custom browser.

KDE Plasma’s Spectacle can definitely do that. You need to capture the “entire screen” before the notification goes away. I suggest using/making a keyboard shortcut which will be quicker than navigating Spectacle’s GUI.

uBlock Origin + extra everything in its settings and JS disabled except for sites that you absolutely need it for will block a whole lot of nastiness on the Wild Wild Web.

So not sure why some are seeing those popups at all

Check out this German site. I personally like to go by most of their recommendations for privacy and security on the net.

A secure way of configuring Librewolf is given here.

For non-German speakers, the contents can easily be translated by using DeepL translator online.

That’s great! I’ll have a look. Maybe I pickup some German words on the fly as well

Vielen Dank!
