Laptop freezes completely during mongoDB compilation

Dear community,
I’m trying to install the unifi controller from the AUR.

yay -Syu unifi

But in the process of compiling the mangoDB, the laptop gets unresponsive and I just can shut it down with long press on power button.
I could not manage to get in TTY.

This is my journalctl at the time it happens. What can I do to investigate this further?

Thank you very much.

how are you trying to install it?

yay -S unifi

or another method?

Yes this is what I am doing.
Added in first post.

Ok now I waited for 10 minutes and the screen went black an the cursor appeared again. It was movable but I could not do anything; even not go into TTY.

Here’s the frozen screen just before the blackscreen with movable mouse cursor appeared.

And this is the journalctl when the screen was black:

The laptop froze approx at 12:02 and the blackscreen appeared at 12:10.

I originally responded do to the lack of information about the install that you went later and provided in the OP. As far as what i can see it looks like the package is still building so I wonder if you have the screen timeout set to soon for this operation?

Hi Moppel,
When compiling, the c compiler runs to memory full:

Dec 27 12:10:09 t480s kernel: Out of memory: Killed process 10128 (cc1plus) total-vm:1671356kB, anon-rss:1604640kB, file-rss:0kB, shmem-rss:0kB, UID:1000 pgtables:3292kB oom_score_adj:200

Can you increase the swap – if that can help at all.

Yes, I know. I edited the OP but did not want to fool you by any means.

All the time I was still using the Laptop until it became unresponsive. So I don’t think this should be an issue.

I am using a swap file. I’ll have a look how to increase it.

Found this for Ubuntu, will it work on EOS too?

Steps

First disable swap file:

sudo swapoff /swapfile

Now let’s increase the size of swap file:

sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/swapfile bs=1M count=1024 oflag=append conv=notrunc

The above command will append 1GiB of zero bytes at the end of your swap file.

Setup the file as a “swap file”:

sudo mkswap /swapfile

enable swaping:

sudo swapon /swapfile

I tested this in a VM and it worked perfectly. But please, before you do that, make a backup of your data in case it does go wrong. Or wait a little longer until a Linux-Guru can really answer your question. I’m not that much of a pro…
Good luck!

Well I tun into the following problem:

[jannisf@t480s ~]$ LC_ALL=C sudo swapoff /swapfile
swapoff: /swapfile: swapoff failed: No such file or directory

But it seems like I have a swapfile:

[jannisf@t480s ~]$ swapon
NAME TYPE SIZE USED PRIO
/swap/swapfile file 512M 0B -2

Any idea?

Edit: OK yeah I’m dumb. It says that my swapfile is in /swap/swapfile

Looks like you have only 7.5 (?) GB of RAM and a swap file that is too small (only half a gig??). Create a new swap file, with the minimum size as the size of your ram, so ~ 8GB

sudo swapoff /swap/swapfile
sudo rm /swap/swapfile
sudo btrfs filesystem mkswapfile --size 8G /swap/swapfile
sudo swapon /swap/swapfile

Well it seems to be the default size installer created for me. Until now I thought the swapfile is dynamic in size and this is one of its advantages.

Looks good with your commands. Thank you very much!

[jannisf@t480s ~]$ sudo swapon
NAME TYPE SIZE USED PRIO
/swap/swapfile file 8G 0B -2

Also the compilation seems to run through now.
Too small swapfile most likely was the problem.

Usage during compilation:

$ swapon --show
NAME TYPE SIZE USED PRIO
/swap/swapfile file 8G 1,2G -2

In the end I find it rather disturbing, that in case of swap shotage the whole system freezes instead of killing the swapeating process or at least giving some obvious hint.
Just expected more from good 'ol Linux there. :kissing_heart:
