KDE Linux leaves the pre-alpha stage as it releases Alpha 1…
A friend of mine has been using it (in a VM) for a while now; she says it’s been a smooth experience, although some features haven’t been implemented yet.
Downloaded the ISO to try in a VM, also they mentioned the Gnome OS one so I downloaded that one as well. Will check them out later when I have some free time. ![]()

It lost me at immutable
Yeah. Yuck!
Anyway, who takes the ultimate tinkers distro and makes it untinkerable?
Yeah, I loaded it twice (once very recently) and gave it a spin, wasn’t impressed at all and I like KDE.
At this point, my feelings are ‘Why?’, though I guess they do need some place and being their own place is better than continuing being Ubuntu based.
It even lost me when they say it’s not arch while they use their packages and it’s kernel, immutable and flatpak ![]()
Valve (Steam Deck) ![]()
Is that immutable as well? I thought it was straight up Arch with a desktop mode and everything.
Is it not meant to be more like a showroom than a distro they expect people to actually use?
Might be good for checking out major Plasma releases without having to install it. I must admit though I still don’t understand how KDE Linux and Neon both need to exist.
Of course they expect people to use it. KDE Linux is the next step incorporating the lessons learned from Neon. If they could ax Neon today they would probably do it, but they have to support existing users and this is just an early Alpha which will take probably two years before becoming an official release.
Yup, immutable.
Maybe they should focus on learning from Ubuntu rather than Neon.
Maybe shoot them an email and share your wisdom, maybe they realize the errors of their ways. ![]()
Alright pal I was only having a but of fun.
Looks like they learned from Canonical… Alienate your user base first, then try to conquer a market that doesn’t exist.
KDE forums and user base are that not that active.
But yeah they lost me when they said it is immutable and used flatpak.
TIL. I suppose it makes sense for a console though.
