How to do that?
I donât want to give you the wrong instructions because Iâm not 100% on it. I just know that the previous firmware is there. I know how to remove the iwlwifi module and reload it. Iâm just not sure on how to make it use that particular firmware. I donât want to cause a problem for you but i know this may be the issue with the latest firmware.
Edit: Maybe someone can help with that that knows more on it.
Okay i think i know how to do it. First you need to have the downgrade package installed. Then what you need to do is see if the previous firmware package is in /var/cache/pacman/pkg
You are looking for iwlwifi-9000-pu-b0-jf-b0-43.ucode
Install downgrade
yay -S downgrade
So then you can use the downgrade command. Iâm not sure if it needs sudo but i assume so.
pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/linux-firmware-xxxxxx ( this is the name of the firmware)
Edit: I 'm not 100% on this so you may want to get further direction before attempting this. Maybe one of the devs can assist.
sudo pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/linux-firmware-20200421.78c0348-1-any.pkg.tar.zst
has been issued, rebooted, âŚwill wait and seeâŚ
EDIT:
not this oneâŚfull lock up after 10 mins
As that is the oldest firmware in my system, and the system used to work without lockups, I think that I may be barking up the wrong tree. Will instead load the LTS kernel, and see if that works.
Iâm not sure what those firmware files are? I only know the one you need as i have given. iwlwifi-9000-pu-b0-jf-b0-43.ucode. There are lots of firmware files. They may be for other things. I canât tell just by the file as i have nothing to refer it to.
Youâre right, despite downgrading the firmware file , the old version 46 is still there, still active. Iâll try mv -ing it to see what happensâŚ
The previous file may not exist on your system. It is on mine because i don;'t have iwlwifi so it hasnât been used. Yours may not exist in the cache after being updated.
Edit: As you say you could try the lts kernel in the mean time.
I have the file on my system.
Yes, I have the file, so moved the 46 version. After reboot:
dmesg | grep firmware
[ 0.324312] Spectre V2 : Enabling Restricted Speculation for firmware calls

With the LTS kernel the system is so far working, but keeps halting for 2mins or so.
Still getting in dmesg:
[ 202.237286] iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3: Unhandled alg: 0x707
I still think you need to add
options iwlwifi swcrypto=0
To this file
/etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
Maybe it wonât work but worth trying.
Thanks for tryingâŚ
looks like a hardware error. After doing all of the above, dmesg reports:

Yet it still works in (ssssh) w10
Maybe goi back to the current file and here are some other options to try.
/etc/modprobe.d/wifi.conf
options iwlwifi lar_disable=1
options iwlwifi bt_coex_active=0
I have tested this hardware under MX Linux 19.2 AHS Live ISO, which is running with the same firmware ( version 46 ) , and kernel 5.6.14. All works fine there. About to downgrade kernel to 5.6.15 as per my cacheâŚ
The kernel is now 5.7.4
As a side note on clear linux which is Intels project and the iwlwifi is also Intel.
After trying 5.6.14 and 15, and getting the same result, I wondered about the kernel parameters sent by grub, as they were not active with the MXLinux.
On this laptop I had found that the parameters : quiet irqpoll loglevel=3 pci=nomsi, noaer
had to be passed in order for the hardware to be happy. At a guess, I removed the pci=nomsi, noaer
and found that booting now dmesg | grep iwl gave a vastly different result, and no lockups;

So thanks, @ricklinux, for sticking with me through this. Itâs properly solved now, at least for the moment
So it is using the latest firmware again. The nomsi is related to pci devices
A Message Signaled Interrupt is a write from the device to a special address which causes an interrupt to be received by the CPU.
Redhat has a why is pci=nomsi needed or recommended by my hardware vendor
. Basically they elaborate on how not all machines or chipsets support MSI correctly.
This is complicated stuff but what happens is it reverts to pin based signalling at the hardware level.
PCI devices can only support a single pin-based interrupt per function. Often drivers have to query the device to find out what event has occurred, slowing down interrupt handling for the common case. With MSIs, a device can support more interrupts, allowing each interrupt to be specialized to a different purpose. One possible design gives infrequent conditions (such as errors) their own interrupt which allows the driver to handle the normal interrupt handling path more efficiently. Other possible designs include giving one interrupt to each packet queue in a network card or each port in a storage controller.
This is all in the design of the board from the manufacturer and is complicated engineering level stuff that is above my level of knowledge.
Anyone else seeing such errors? Specifically wireless network unstableâŚ
