issues with gta 5

im fairly new to endeavour, ive been using it for a few days and so far its been working great except. every game works except for one, gta 5.

ive been having issues with it ever since i installed it, when i clicked play on steam, it got stuck on “Launching…”, eventually it managed to actually open… for about 20 seconds. when it got to the loading screen, my entire system literally froze.

i heard something about needing a swap file, so i made one about 3GB. i also switched the gpu to nvidia using optimus manager. and that seemed to have fixed it and i actually got into the game… until i drove to the city. literally the second i entered it every time, the game either crashed or froze the whole system.

i heard somethin about dxvk and lutris, so i installed lutris and i could actually enter the city this time. also, before doing that, gta online didnt work, it wouldnt even show up in the game’s main menu, but now it worked and i could actually play, everything ran smoothly and without a problem but only for about 15 minutes. the game just randomly froze my entire system while i was on a mission.

i believe i have all the nvidia and vulkan stuff set up, but despite that, this still occurs. also, it seems to be specifically on this game, every other game i have worked perfectly fine so far.

is there something i did wrong? did i forget to install something? please help me out, heres some extra information just in case:

GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M
CPU: Intel Core i5 6300HQ
RAM: 8 GB
DE: XFCE
Kernel: 6.6.44-3-lts
Proton Experimental

Not all non-native Steam games are going to run without a hitch. There’s a few things I can suggest you try though. In most cases, these steps resolve any issues for me:

  • Install GloriousEggroll’s custom Proton (aka Proton-GE) restart Steam and set it as Steam’s default compatibility tool. It has a number of enhancements over the official Steam versions and has provided the most consistent success for me.
yay -S proton-ge-custom
  • If Proton-GE has issues with a particular game, adjust the compatibility settings for just that game. Starting from the most recent versions of Proton, work your way backwards until you hopefully find a version that works. Some games will only work on older versions of Proton. Typically I’ll find success before getting to Proton 5.
  • Reference ProtonDB and Steam community pages for that game, for any tips. Note ProtonDB tips for GTA5.

I second doing this.
On top of this I would set play around with various game settings to see if there is anything in there that may be causing it.

What are your Steam launch options?

mangohud %command% gamemode %command%

What GPU is being used? I presume the GTX?

The “%command%” between mangohud and gamemode is not neccessary and “gamemode” should be “gamemoderun”.

ive tried every proton version, that did nothing. i tried tinkering with the game’s settings, i switched the directx version to 10.1 and 10, which, surprisingly did make a difference, but all it did was make the game perform slightly better, and the crashes still didnt stop.

i tried switching the kernel to kernel-zen and all that did was make the game run for longer… at this point i might just dualboot windows and eos

Searching this on ProtonDB shows less than promising results for the game running, though most of the results are 2 to 4 years old.

Should run around 45-60 fps.

I had it running last year on this PC with next to no issues. (Don’t really have the data for it at the moment to see if thats still the case.) This is why I looked it up with their GPU model on protondb.
