Is there some way i can examine the resources that the computer is using (e.g. ram/cpu/disk usage) in one place with a gui?

You are in luck because there are probably literally a thousand options to choose from. The list from @pebcak’s post was great, and a great place to start, but is also a drop in the bucket.
