Is there a "best" VM for my use-case?

Thank you very much! Have some old stuff only (XP & W7). Hope, it will work…

Yes, good luck, the drivers are available for both 32-bit and 64-bit. But haven’t tried for xp or w7

Me too but i use vmware pro!

One short remark:
My gnome-boxes work very well! - Installed 1 Opensuse (online) & 1 XP from an old iso - wow!
It’s really straightforward.
But converting my old virtual machines did not work so long.
Not the short way (vdi to qcow2) nor the long way (export raw and then convert).
Will need some research…

Your hardware has relatively little to do with what the correct VM for you is, what you intend to use the VM for is the main thing.

For testing linux distro virtualbox and qemu with virt manager are probably the best, virtualbox is easier to use, qemu is more customizable (by a lot), but getting a nice 60fps graphical experience on it is tricky if you want that.

If you don’t mind spending hours tinkering with it and learning to use it as well as you reasonably can, qemu+virt-manager is ideal probably.
