Input delay

I have recently built a computer with the following components:

ryzen 2700
asus b450 prime-plus
16gb ram (15CL, 3000Mhz)
nvidia gt 1030 GPU
500gb m2 SSD

Prior to that, I had the following laptop:

ASUS VivoBook 14 S403
i7 8565U
16gb ram
500gb m2 SSD

My problem is that the user experience was much better and smoother on the laptop. I feel that my laptop was faster and I experience some input lag. I have previously heard that older ryzens have the problem input lag on Windows.

Does anyone else experience this with Ryzen?
Would I have a better performance if I bought intel 10400 or 11400 or better?

can you please boot on USB live endaevour Os
open a terminal and provide return

inxi -Fza

Is it actually freezing?

Sorry, I have been trying the other DEs of EOS and finally tried Manjaro KDE today so I dont have the output from EOS KDE. Nonetheless, no improvement.

For example when I click an app on KDE, the starting logo jumps up and down with FPS drops. Also when I start an app, it feels like the system is freezing as if the CPU is throttling but the cpu is never beyond %15. Other than that, overall laggy. My expectations is not to have a blazing fast system but to have something better than the laptop experience.

I don’t have an answer for the root cause - but I agree that performance SHOULD be much better than it seems to be. I’ve got 2 Ryzen systems on the go, and laggy is the LAST thing I would them!

Being slow to initialize is expected to some degree, but once it starts a boot right up to shutdown it should snap along just fine.

Did you try specific BIOS settings, by any chance? IS the RAM speed setting appropriate? Are secure boot and fast boot disabled? I run that Asus board, so I could check any settings for comparo with mine if you want.

I double checked that the CPU and RAM is overclocked in BIOS, and fast boot and secure boot is disabled. What is your Ryzens? Maybe newer versions are just better overall?

The one on your mobo is a Ryzen 5 2400G (integrated graphics) - and here’s some info from the BIOS:

  1. Mem is 16GB or Corsair DDR4 (3000Mhz) running at 2133
  2. Mobo main voltage is at 1.417V (runs at 28C)
  3. Most other voltage settings are at auto

I’ll add in an inxi -Faz in a minute - from that machine.

You might spot a driver difference from all that too. Good luck!

I think you are going to have to experiment with some kernel parameters. There are many but here is a few you can try. You could also check your some logs.

processor.max_cstate=5
idle=nomwait

rcu_nocbs=0-11

Or

processor.max_cstate=1

Edit:
https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/admin-guide/kernel-parameters.txt

Your Bios version is way out of date and needs to be updated. It is 9 versions older.

for amd ryzen series
add theses options boot kernel

  • “amd_iommu=on iommu=pt”
  • “processor.max_cstate=5 rcu_nocbs=0_15”

more general

  • systemd.unified_cgroup_hierarchy=true"
  • scsi_mod.use_blk_mq=1"

if possible avoid using snap

I updated BIOS after your message and I saw that the new version Apollo was released a few days ago so I did a completely clean install.

CPU overclocked by motherboard
RAMs at 3000Mhz

Everything is running very smooth now. I also had some tearing that I didnt care about on the screen when I started apps, it is gone now.
