Illegal instruction (core dumped) spotify

hi guys

I decided to write because I can’t solve a small problem

i have been using eos for a long time without experiencing any problem

but after some time i decided to ‘refresh’ my eos with a new clean installation

right now i’m using the latest version of eos with xfce (latest)

Kernel: Linux 6.12.3-arch1-1
Display (SEC3245): 1366x768 @ 60 Hz in 15” [Built-in].
CPU: Pentium(R) T4300 (2) @ 2.10 GHz
GPU 1: Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [Discrete]
GPU 2: Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller [Integrated]
Memory: 1.51 GiB / 3.76 GiB (40%)
Swap: 0 B / 8.27 GiB (0%)
Disk (/): 25.40 GiB / 289.82 GiB (9%) - btrfs

these are the hw info of my laptop

the problem is that i can’t use spotify anymore!

i tried both from aur ( with and without yay) and spotify-launcher.

the program ( both in the first case and in the second ) is installed without errors but does not start!

when i try to start it from the terminal i get as error: Illegal instruction ( core dumped ) and nothing else.

in internet i found and tried several guides but none works

would you have, please, any advice on how to fix it!

p.s. before doing the clean installation i never had any problem

If you check the latest comments on the spotify package’s AUR page, you’ll see that there is some mention of this issue, specifically:

Found it! https://community.spotify.com/t5/Desktop-Linux/Illegal-instruction-core-dumped/td-p/6439555 After some research on the net, it turns out that recent versions of the Spotify binary require a fairly recent processor. I uninstalled Spotify, cleared its cache and installed an old version from 2023: spotify-snapstore (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/spotify-snapstore which is marked as outdated) on my old machine under KDE. This is a troubleshooting solution if your processor is too old…

Your processor is from circa 2009, so perhaps this is the issue.

Here’s the AUR page:

Could an older processor be causing issues with the latest Spotify binary on Linux? Some users suggest installing an older version, like the 2023 spotify-snapstore, as a fix for older processors. Is this a viable solution?

That appears to be the situation.

According to comments on the spotify package AUR page, yes.

Also, see the latest comment on the AUR page (from alxlve, 2024-12-22) where a modified PKGBUILD is provided.

Good luck!
