If Arch dies, I would probably switch to LMDE and Linux will be forever ![]()
Check these outā¦
https://bitbucket.org/natemaia/dk/src/master/
https://archbang.org/2022/01/22/testing-out-dk-window-manager-and-iso-update/
Iāve actually watched that video since asking the question. No luck so far.
Been reading through the source and as far as I can see (meaning looking at the configuration of others vs the default vs mine), Iāve done everything correctly. It just wonāt switch to a new workspace, even after changing the binding to something very simple: super + 1-10 and removing other args.
Iāll keep trying though because this is exactly what I need in a Window Manager. i3 was almost perfect, but the tabs take up unnecessary space. Only issue with i3 though.
Thanks all the same. ![]()
This is confusing - because āLinuxā is the kernel used not only by Arch, but also many other distributions. Your question looks confused in the way that Ubuntu users use the word āLinuxā to mean specifically āUbuntu which is based on Debianā and assume that āLinuxā uses āaptā and ādpkgā.
If the Linux Kernel disappeared the impact would be a bit more predictable - so then BSD might be an alternative.
FreeBSD isnāt Linux - it has itās own kernel.
If Arch went away tomorrow, then Linux kernel will still work - so youād just choose another base - so take away Arch, you still have Debian and RPM based distributions donāt you?
Why would you want to use Pacman (designed to work with Arch) when Arch isnāt there? Thatās like wanting to use Nala/apt without debian, or saying you want to continue using your spoon even though thereās no food left in the bowl.
Of course, if you took on the job of maintaining the repos yourself, then Arch would not be goneā¦
EndeavourOS would have to consider switching - would they go Debian? or RPM?
Thereās always Crunchbang++, or Linux Mint ![]()
@Zesko @Ben The title is not the actual question. The actual question(s) is found in the body of the post.
Iāve changed it to āIf Arch Dies, Will My System Still Work?ā to avoid some confusion.
Debian is not a rolling release, but an excellent choice, in itās own right.
I know. I added it to my options because I use BTRFS, Cinnamon, and Timeshift. - two of which are developed by the Mint team. Debian (over Ubuntu) is a bonus. ![]()
If Arch dies, I donāt care for any of my systems⦠Iāll die with it ![]()
However, Debian (sid) is a rolling release.
There is actually a software that allows to use other package managers on any distribution, in a sandboxed environment that somehow āexportsā installed applications to be used in a normal environment. I have never used it, but its well tested so far.
Why would someone want to use that? Because the repositories of the distributions may have software that is not available elsewhere or is more up to date or is build differently for features (and bugs). Also you may like some of the features of the package managers or you know it in and out, but that is secondary reason. I personally never used it, because I have no needs for on EndeavourOS (Arch repos+AUR solves most problems, and optionally AppImage or maybe Flatpak is enough).
Yep, that was why I asked about pacman, but Iāve seen XBPS (from VOID Linux) in action - wouldnāt hate it.
And yes, distrobox is pretty effing awesome. I just donāt have a need for it at the moment.
Iāll probably go back to Windows if Arch dies ![]()
Valve will bring the NixOS package manager to SteamOS with the next big update: https://github.com/NixOS/nix/issues/7173 (Edit: wrong link corrected) . The reason is, because Flatpak is not enough as it only covers graphical applications. So distrobox (or nixos package system) and Flatpak is useful on immutable distributions like SteamOS.
I wonder if Arch will ever do an immutable system. In such cases the AUR wouldnāt work the way it is now. And that would mean the end of Arch as we know, basically the death, in favor of a Neo Arch. ![]()
Years ago on the Debian forums someone had a sigline about Sid(unstable): āWhen running Unstable- if it breaks you get to keep the piecesā.
Just kidding for those who thought I was serious.
Got it working. Erik from Arco uploaded his config after customising dK for a new ISO. Modifying them now and so far all is well. ![]()
And Debian sid is actually quite excellent⦠(my opinion)
That applies equally to all open source material⦠![]()
