So there is the thread.
The thread just got worse and worse. I sat here and edited what I want to say and now I have given it all up. Well, I have to get back to work. I have moved on.
I certainly don’t get the same impression for reading it that you do. I don’t see that as being a situation where someone asked the wrong question and was demonized for it. From my reading I see it is as a mix of people who are trying to help and a people who are disagreeing with the suggestion. To be fair, I was involved in the discussion so maybe my view is biased.
Since it was a suggestion for changing the distro and not a help request, it seems natural that people would express their opinions on the topic. In this case, most of the opinions were not the same as the OP’s but shouldn’t it be OK for them to express their opinion as well?
Some posts from that topic are no longer visible because they were completely inappropriate. While those posts didn’t add any value to the conversation, the responses of others who saw them at the time would have likely been influenced by them so some of the attitudes you are seeing may be stemming from that.
Suggestion posts can often go sideways when the OP gets defensive and tries to aggressively argue with everyone who disagrees with the suggestion.
A big part of the problem in situations like this is that some people believe that expressing different opinions and having a discussion about it is a normal and healthy part of discussion. On the other hand, some people view anyone who disagrees with them as attacking them. When those two groups get together, things can get complicated.
Since this forum is made up of people from a wide variety of backgrounds/cultures/demographics, these types of conflicts are somewhat inevitable. Especially when combined with the communication challenges that exist with written communication from people who don’t share a native language.
It would be great if we could all give each other the benefit of the doubt, but that doesn’t always happen.
I agree with you as i read through it too and the only part of the discussion i did not appreciate was the use of foul language. There was no reason for that, and i think both parties should have had consequences because it shouldn’t be tolerated. There is no excuse for the using this type of language and or language that insinuates something or has a connotation! As far as people ganging up on the user i didn’t see that at all. Although i was not involved in the posting i too would disagree with poster. This is not the goal of EndeavourOS. There is a proper procedure to bring up suggestions and the devs are the ones that decide. It’s not i want this because…and you should just do it because i want it.
Arch = build your own system how you want . it only has what you put in it EOS just give user a helping hand and give you basic what you need . YOU!! do rest The path EOS is taking is great for new users that want Arch but not know how or not want to install the Arch way. Sadly they forget it is for everyone and we all want need different things ( you want a simple GUI and I dont ) who right ?
"keep it simple stupid " That what people forget You want/need then you put it in system . EOS keep do what you are doing
The first post did not turn out the way I wanted. More programs that stop working and the fast rollout. Otherwise, there is nothing wrong with Arch or EndeavourOS!
I use downgrade (installs with yay downgrade) whenever an app breaks and I add the offending package to ignore list for a month or so. This approach has worked for me so far. Yes it happens, but it happens rarely. Also this is a daily driver that I am doing my job on (I’m a programmer) and earning my living with.
There is also the reverse side of the coin you’re describing: like often I see bugs disappearing from apps I regularly use, or minor GUI improvements that just make me smile. Sometimes even fixes for bugs or feature requests I have submitted. For example, I can’t wait to get the next version of XFCE which is just a month away now. I’m counting the days
